2008 AGM Report
2008 AGM
There was a very big attendance of members for the club’s Annual General Meeting in the Complex on Friday night last. They heard club Secretary Sean Mc Elvaney in a wide ranging and comprehensive report note at national level, the appointment of Paraic Duffy as Ard Stiurthoir, Christy Cooney election at congress to succeed Nicky Brennan. He outlined the administrative personnel within the county, as well as the revitalised performances of Monaghan in the championship after their disastrous opener in Brewster Park .He dwelt at length on all aspect of club activities, paying particular attention to the senior team’s performances and ultimate relegation despite the best efforts of a very committed management team. He included a pictorial record of the history making St Michael’s N.S. team, winners of Roinn 4 Cumann na mBunscoil competition. On development he said a substantial amount of work had been completed and he outlined plans for the next phase due to commence in 2009.

He expressed sympathy to all who were bereaved especially to the family’s of club members who were called to their eternal reward in 2008, Dominic Prunty, Frank Mc Connon, Packie Mc Elvaney an Terry Mc Entee and reminded everyone that Mass for all members living and deceased would be offered in St Mary’s church on Sunday 28th December at 11.00am Youth Committee secretary Nigel Lynch in his report single out the successful Under 12 squad. He lavished praise on the U8/10 mentors whose Elco Oils sponsored coaching programme but for a few weeks around Christmas runs the whole year round. He thanked parents not only of the youngest age group but of all ages for supporting and encouraging their children to participate in these coaching sessions and competitive games. He was fulsome in his praise of the clubs involvement as a host club in Feile, he thanked the Cavan organisers for affording the club the opportunity and Youth Committee Chairman Enda Murphy for co coordinating the organisional effort locally.

Treasurer Mary Mc Connon’s financial report showed an operation deficit over the year. The audit accounts generated plenty of debate as members sought clarifications and explanation, Mary expanded on the figure presented and all queried were answered and explained to everyone satisfaction.

Club chairman Danny Clerkin in his address was very critical of the decision taken to abandon minor football for club players for a lengthy period during the year and the devastating effect this had on competitions when they eventually resumed. He counselled the club’s adult panel this year “let it not be through lack of effort”. He acknowledged all those who give so generously of their time as club volunteers and expressed the view that the club belong to all its members and he encouraged all members to play their part. Danny's address and both secretaries’ reports can be view in their entirety on the club website at www.seanmcdermotts.net

Under 12s win shield after titanic struggle
Under 12 Shield Final
Seans 3-06
Cremartin 0-08

on Friday night in Rooskey our under 12 side had a titanic struggle in the Division 2 Shield Final before eventually over coming Cremartin, it took extra time to decide the outcome. Both sides were locked together on four points apiece after regulation time, despite very few scores on the board this was anything but a dull game, it was hectic end to end stuff throughout. Our youngsters led at the interval by two points to one, Shane Farrell opening the scoring after 12 minutes, Aidan Ward doubling the tally two minutes later with a classy point, midfielder Kevin Mc Vicar getting Cremartin off the mark in the 18th minute. Two second half frees from our man of the match midfielder Niall Kearns in the 10th and 12th minute completed our lads tally. Cremartin possibly deserved a better return from their superiority in this period but had to rely in the end on Barry Kerr's accuracy from place balls to force the match into extra time, the talented midfielder knocking over three excellent frees. James Mc Carron in goal was by far the busier keeper making one first class save and repeatedly thwarting the Cremartin forward division with safe handling and smart clearences. Cousins Dylan and Jamie Keenan say plenty of the ball in the full back line but despite being put under pressure by their opposite numbers were always calm and composed, Dylan bravely sticking out a leg in the opening minutes of extra time to deflect a stinging net bound rasper away from his goal. The halfback line, on the flanks the Mc Nally brothers Arron and Dylan and in the centre Paul Bannon were always in the thick of things. Dylan steady and strong, the younger Arron working feverishly to keep tabs on his direct opponent the skilful Muireann Atkinson, and Paul, his timely interceptions, tenacious tackling and forays forward adding considerably to the effectiveness of this quintet as a defensive unit. In extra time Barry Kerr had the opening score in the 2nd minute to give his team the advantage for the first time in the match, Niall Kearns levelled things again three minutes later. From the kick out Seans were awarded a free about thirty metres out; Kearns lobed a high speculative ball into the congested goalmouth, deceiving everyone the ball ended up in the back of the net. In the eight minute full forward Aidan Ward fielded majestically turned and landed the best score of the match, Cremartin showing character responded instantly Kerr on the end of a sweeping move up field hit a well taken point of his own. In the closing minutes of this extra time period our goal had a couple of narrow escapes before Cremartin pressure was rewarded with another Kerr point this time from a 45 metre free. Scoreboard reading Seans 1 - 6 Cremartin 0 -7; still anybody's game. As already mentioned Niall Kearns was industrious throughout, his midfield partner Enda Connolly was not far behind, working tirelessly to keep Kevin Mc Vicar and the elusive Barry Kerr at bay. Upfront Shane Farrell, Aidan Ward and Sean Grant all got on the score sheet, Ryan Mc Entee was unlucky not to have joined them when his shot rattled the crossbar but he can be well satisfied with his contribution. Shane Kelly held his own too and was just narrowly wide of target on a couple of occasions, Jason Kearns, Darragh Bell, Shay Mc Caffrey and Mathew Mc Guirk also had their moments when introduced. But it was the intelligent positioning of Patrick Mc Cabe when he joined the fray that help upset and force the Cremartin defence into conceding those costly goal resulting frees. The second period of extra time was only minutes when Dylan Keenan denied Cremartin an almost certain goal with his brave block. The turning point came two minutes later a Kearns free into the Cremartin goal mouth was met bravely by Sean Grant, diving to his left he steered his fisted effort pass goalkeeper and defenders on the goal line to give his side a five point lead. Cremartin continued to drive forward but were narrowly wide of target with several efforts. Five minutes remained when another Kearns free sneaked inside the upright to the Cremartin net. The tireless Barry Kerr did raise another white flag, and Ryan Mc Entee crashed a pile driver of the Cremartin crossbar before the referee blew the final whistle. Our boys happy and delighted they had got the breaks and the goals when it mattered to secure a much welcomed juvenile trophy to the club. Final Score Seans 3- 6 Cremartin 0 - 8. The trophy was present to joint captains James Mc Carron and Dylan Keenan. As well as those already mentioned the panel included Niall Murphy, Adam O' Driscoll, Mark Murphy, Ryan Hughes, Martin Mc Guirk, Gareth Mc Guirk, Ashley Corrigan, Patrick Mc Phillips, Kyle Treanor, Jack Brennan, Ryan Connolly and Ryan Mc Quillan.

Brilliant C's battle hard to lift Paddy Kieran Cup
Paddy Kieran Cup
Seans 1-09
Emyvale 0-09

On Saturday evening our reserve C side despite playing second fiddle to a more skilful Oram outfit and adrift by eight point to four at the interval, rallied in the second half with the introduction of team captain James Murphy, Philip Farrell, Eunan Mc Entee and Stephen Mc Elvaney. It was the latter's vision and exquisite pass to Colin Murphy who dispatched the ball to the roof of the Oram net from twenty yards that turned the game in our favour mid way through the second half. Enda Murphy's tenacity halted an Oram attack he found the youthful Padraig Mc Guirk who carried thirty yards and delivered to Mc Elvaney out on the wing, Canavan like he found Murphy in the middle with the Oram defence marked absent he finished with confidence and aplomb. Oram won the possession stakes powered by an impressive display of high fielding by midfielder Barry Quinn, but failed to capitalised on that superiority in front of goal especially in the second half registering just a solitary point. The superb defending of Paraic Coyle ably assisted by Enda Murphy and Eamonn Mc Quillan did not help their cause. The introduction of James Murphy and Philip Farrell to that sector helped considerably and gave our boys much more ability to counter attack especially through the energetic Farrell.Defenders Fintan Connolly, Ruarí Mc Carron, and Gerard Mc Ardlle all played their part and couldn't be faulted for effort. At midfield JP Mc Entee and Stephen Clerkin had their hands full with Quinn and his partner Lorcan Keenan. Up front the inside line of David Mc Entee Colin Murphy and Nigel Mc Quillan were always a threat, Mc Quillan keeping our boys in touch with five expertly converted free, two in the opening half. Half forwards Christian Keenan, Ciaran Murphy, and Paraic Mc Guirk were always in the thick of the action, the later finishing superbly after one of his trade mark solo runs. The fir ionaid included Fergal Mc Quillan, Gary Larkin, Fergal Mullan, Seamus Conaty, John, Mc Connon, Alan Treanor, Paul Mc Phillips, Paul Durnion, Pardraig Murphy, Murt Cleere and Adrian Mc Carron. Having won this trophy in its inaugural year 1981 and again in '93 the long overdue return home on this occasion of the Paddy Kieran Cup was well celebrated by the victorious panel.

Seans battle to share the spoils with Emyvale
Harte Peat Intermediate Football League
Seans 2-07
Emyvale 2-07

A last gasp fisted point secured a share of the spoils and our first league point of the season on Sunday last when Emyvale were visitors to club head quarters. Battling against the elements in the opening half Emyvale appeared to be in pole position at the interval, managing to restrict Mc Dermots to just a two point cushion, the half time scoreboard reading Seans 0- 5 Emyvale 0 - 3. James Treanor (3) and Patrick Kieran (2) were Sean's scorers, Treanor's 7th minute effort a real beauty from way out on the wing, Emyvale relied on the thrusty boot of Darren Farmer to keep them in touch. Wind assisted Emyvale attacked with fervour but fullback Emylin Clerkin cut out a misdirected pass two minutes after the restart. He carried, then laid off to Patrick Kieran, Kieran's thirty metre pass found Stephen Mc Elvaney and he finished the best move of the match with an exquisite shot to the corner of the net, great move, great goal! Colm Mc Kenna and Darren Farmer converted frees to keep Emyvale within touching distance, but when Mc Elvaney was on hand to toe poke the ball over the line in a goalmouth scramble after goalkeeper Declan Callery had made a good save the points looked like they were staying locally. That six point advantage however was short lived, reduced to fourteen men Emyvale threw caution to the wind. Centre half back Brendan Mc Kenna found himself well forward, his tap down found name sake Colm, he swivel Elvis style to plant the ball firmly to the roof of the net and reduced his team’s deficit by half in the processes. Patrick Kieran (jnr) lifted the siege for Seans with a well taken point from play. Substitute Brendan Askin fired Emyvale right back into the match with a cracker of a goal in the twenty fourth minute, and when Brendan Mc Kenna split the posts a minute later to level the match with a mighty effort from fifty metres the big Emyvale support suddenly found their voices. The roar was deafening from that quarter when Askin was on hand to land another neat point from play and put his side into the lead for the first time in the match. Emyvale defended stoutly as our lads pressed for an equaliser; it was left to the wile Kieran to carry and hold on to the ball in the dying minutes before fisting over to level things again and secure and a well deserved share of the spoils. No doubt our boys will be disappoint that they didn't take both points, given those two early second half goals, but the management team will be happy with the battling qualities displayed in the closing minutes when the game seem to be slipping away. On the day our star performer was corner back Damien Tackney, industrious and determined throughout, he got good support in defence from Emylin Clerkin Fntan Mc Kenna and Damien and Conor Connolly, Martin Kieran also showed up well in this sector, his first game back following his recent injury. At midfield Sean Mc Kenna and Christopher Connolly more than held there own. Up front James Treanor, Patrick Kieran and Stephen Mc Elvaney posed the biggest threat with Noel Rice and Barry Mc Guinness foraging like beavers, young Patrick Kieran revelled in his role as playmaker. Next outing for this squad is away to Corduff on Easter Sunday.

Positive vibes after first training of 2008
There was a good workout for all attending the opening training session of the season on Sunday last. The new manager left the players in no doubt by the content of the session and his comments afterwards just what would be demanded and required from anyone with expectations of securing a place on the team. There is a fairly busy schedule to the training programme for the opening few weeks at least, with session planned for Tuesday and Friday nights at 8 o'clock plus a Sunday session. Punctuality and a full attendance are requested, absentees on Sunday please take note.

Cormac was on hand to take a few snaps from the session. You can view them click here!

Large numbers attend 2007 AGM
A large attendance at our Annual General Meeting heard club secretary Sean Mc Elvaney deliver a comprehensive report on all aspects of club activities in 2007. He dwelt at length on the precarious situation the senior team found themselves in, facing relegation and the combined effort of management and players to successful stave off the dreaded drop. On the discipline front he said the club in no way condoned indicipline either on or of the field and encouraged players mentors and supporters to show respect. When cited the club had accepted their responsibility and sanctions accompanying any transgressions. Discipline was he said a two way street and he express disappointment at the length of time it took to process one players case, with no explanation as yet received or forth coming for the delay. He looked forward in hope in 2008 on the playing field, and voiced similar optimism on the development front.

Nigel Lynch singled out the Under 14 squad, the only team to adorn the club mantelpiece with silverware in his inaugural youth secretary report. He outlined the continuing effort in underage coaching and development and he thanked Hughie Mc Elvaney of Elco Oil Ltd. for his financial support in this area. Concluding he appealed for more adults to become involved in the supervision and coaching elements of under age activities.

Club chairman Danny Clerkin in his address complimented the senior panel and management for their effort when relegation stared them in the face. He admitted that the squad had lost some influential players over the last few seasons but he believed the present crop were well able to stand up now, and make a name for themselves in 2008. On development he said the inclement weather had played havoc with development plans, he acknowledged the advice and expertise provide on this front by Ciaran Timoney. On finance he express dismay that outstanding National Lottery funding had still not been received. He described as shameful and absurd that a voluntary organisation such as ours should have to pay taxes of any sort, referring in particular to increased Local Authority charges. He congratulated Paraic Duffy on his appointment as Ard Stiurthoir, and one of our own Ailish Mc Entee on her election to the position of County Secretary he wished them both well in their new posts. Concluding he said " the club executive will endeavour to lead the way as the Sean Mc Dermotts GAC facilitates a place to meet, to deliberate, to plan, to play, to make new friends and to maintain friendships, to cheer and shout for our teams and most of all to support and be there for each other as a thriving and supportive community". Chairmans Address 2007

Rev Father Mc Cluskey , Club Presidents, Executive members and club members may I first of all welcome you all to our Annual General Meeting. Tonights meeting affords us the opportunity to come together in the name of Sean Mac Diarmada G A C to review the season and year almost past and to look ahead and plan for the future. We the Club executive are afforded the opportunity to account to you our members.

Senior Teams - Did anyone for a moment during the past season think we were going to be relegated to Junior ranks …..ye of little faith. When reality struck and relegation stared us right in the face minds became focused training attendances increased and an new urgency was called for. When this happened we became a different team and obtained the points necessary to maintain our intermediate status. The problem however was that minds and attitudes were far from focused for the whole of the season, if they had been we would have contended for honours come September instead of securing points to avoid relegation. The focus however never wavered in relation to the effort put in by Tom Mc Geehan and his management team. Mid season saw 7 and 8 players attend training sessions. It would have been very easy for Tom to pack the bags and head for Brookborough but that easy option wasn’t adopted and Tom and co remained to try and turn things around .This they did and all credit must go to them and to our players who responded to that. Tom and his management decided to call it a day at the end of the season. I want to thank them on behalf of the club for their time and effort over the past two seasons. To progress in any grade there must be a concerted and constant effort made. If achieved there is no knowing what that can bring . We proved that at the end of the season. Can we maintain that concerted and sustained effort in 2008. Only our Senior players can answer that. We as a committee can put in place whatever structures necessary to support players and the team management. It is then up to players to buy into a structured and sustained training programme. No doubt we have regrettably lost a number of senior players over the past few years but the present panel of players are quite capable of standing up now and making a name for themselves. Let it commence in 2008. I want to thank all management teams who looked after adult teams in 2007. Our Club Secretary has no doubt reported on the programme of games completed by each team. It is an accomplishment in it self to complete our full programme of games and to field a third adult team.

Youth - At Juvenile level we are so lucky to have individuals who on a regular basis give of their time towards the promotion of juvenile football in our Club. The juveniles of today are our players of tomorrow. Enda Murphy took over as Chairman of our Juvenile committee from Cormac Connolly. No easy task but Enda has took to it like a duck to water. Not content to just administer in that position Enda is weekly on the field putting his young protégés through their skills programme . Nigel Lynch took over as Juvenile Secretary and he too operates at the coalface of things . Thanks to both of you and to all who help and give of your time to what is the most important aspect of Club activity. We may look back over the year past and how wrong it would be to judge our progression in Juvenile football by the amount of cups and trophies won. Surely it is nice to win and nothing can beat it just ask any of our successful U 14 panel but to witness 30 plus youngsters here on a Saturday morning eager and willing to improve on their football skills, surely that is progression as well. In the present world we live where ipods and computer games are all the rage what better activity then to get youngsters outside kicking a ball, meeting and making new friends in a safe and secure environment. Thanks once again to all those who make it possible. Our schools remain an integral part of our juvenile structure. Thanks to the teachers who promote our games there. Last year we developed the pitch at St Marys and this year had plans to do the same at St Michaels but the inclement weather saw Mr Pruntys work fall far behind. Hopefully 2008 will see more progress there.

Development - Indeed the inclement weather we had in the summer played havoc with our plans to complete the terracing and completion of work on the far side of our new pitch. However we have made great strides in the past few months and with work commenced on the final terracing and fencing we should see that side of our grounds completed in time for our first game of the new season. Thanks to all match goers for your co operation in relation to safety restrictions there during games. We thankfully have obtained planning permission for our new dressing room and stand. Plans for same are on display here tonight . We are in the process now of detailing these plans in preparation for getting them out for tender. We will be hoping that work will commence on this next phase in 2008. Yes it is a very ambitious project, an expensive one, one that will take time and effort. Yes it will provide a terrific amenity for our players, it will provide excellent facilities for our supporters. It will enhance our grounds making them the best around. Can we do it Yes! of course we can, we have done it all before and we will do it again. Thanks to Gerry Lynch and those on our development committee for their efforts again in 2007. I want to express our sincere thanks to Ciaran Timoney who so generously gives of his advice and expertise to us on a no fee basis. It is only now when we have to employ such professional people that we realise the full extent of that generousity.

Finance - I want to thank all those who generously contribute to the financial well being of our Club on an Annual basis. Thanks to all those promoters and helpers of our weekly totto and bingo .Thanks to our sponsors Hughie and Elco Oils our main sponsor who remains so generous to us .Thanks to all others who through various sponsorship help finance our club. We had a couple of extra club activities that helped club finances in 2007. Our Auction proved a great success. Run by and in aid of our Juvenile sector. The hosting of the General Election count was very successful and again many many thanks to everyone who helped out in particular Mary Keogh and the ladies who worked so hard to ensure that success. Theres no doubting we will have to embark on a major fund raising venture to finance the funding of phase 3 of our development plan. What form that will take is up for debate but whatever we choose I have every confidence that we will make it another resounding success. Our track record has shown us to be unequaled here you could say we are the Crossmaglen of fund raisers. Last year I had to report that we had made little progress in relation to the drawing down of funds from the National Lottery .An allocation that had been granted to us in 2005. To date we have not received it. Numerous phone calls on a monthly basis, numerous visits to our Solicitor, we still await our funding. I want at this stage to thank Therese in JJ Keenans for all her help in trying to finalise this and other maters for us. At this time we are awaiting documents from the Building Society to be sent to the States Chief Solicitor. Can I say that will be it then, unfortunately I can not. When it will be received I cant tell. It is nothing short of ridiculous that this has taken so long. It is also absurd and shameful that a voluntary organization such as ours be asked to pay taxes of any sort. We this year had a fairly substancial water rate bill to pay to our local authority. We provide the facilities on a voluntary basis for our local community. We do the work that government should be doing. They then impose tax on us that we must fund on a voluntary basis. No voluntary body such as ours should have taxes of any sort imposed on it. We will listen to lip service from Government about community and encouraging people to get involved. Its about time the powers that be started supporting those very people in those Communities. Each year we are astounded by the amount of monies going through our Club on an annual basis. I want to thank our treasurer Mary for all the work she gets through throughout the year. Thanks to our totto promoters, Brian and the loyal workers who weekly attend to help with our weekly bingo, our bar personnel, Cormac as Bar manager and all those who help out there on a regular basis. In the past few weeks Francie and Joan decided to call it a day. We will be forever indebted to them both for the time and effort they have put in over many years. Always accommodating us and at times at short notice. Their honesty, affability and friendly disposition will be missed by all of us. The people who work the bar and who do so on a voluntary basis, sometimes to a late hour require us as patrons to co operate with them in keeping order etc. Thats what is expected of Club members. We as a Club are very proud of the mannerly way events etc are held there. Long may that be so.

Gala Night - Our Dinner Dance again proved an enjoyable and successful evening. Our guests included the 67 to 69 team along with Micky Moran of Derry. Micky and his wife traveled in snowy conditions to honour his promise to attend our function. When offered him a few euro to cover his traveling expense Micky declined most fervently. He told me to put it into our new stand. I think it important I report this at a time when we are debating about grants for players and pay for play it is heartening to know that there are still men like Micky Moran involved in our Association.

County Board - My experience over the past year with Monaghan County Board has left me very disappointed . The pathetic way we had a specific case dealt with was nothing short of disgraceful . We notified Monaghan County Board about an extremely important matter relating to a player and a very important member of our Club in June of 2007. It was eventually dealt with if one can use those terms in November 2007 some 5 months later, and only as a result of contact with Pauric Duffy as player welfare Officer. The players complaint has not been dealt with in any way to our satisfaction, yet the player has served a 24 week suspension. This is very poor administration. The County Board also in their wisdom saw fit to grant no All Ireland tickets to our Club in 2007. Yes they did say this was a decision made by the Clubs themselves in that if you did not referee your full compliment of games you forfeited your All Ireland tickets. We appealed this ruling on us as one of our referees was not available for some time because of personal and genuine reasons. But this appeal fell on deaf ears. What Monaghan County Board were saying to us was that people who give of their voluntary time, if they fall ill your Club will be penalised. Its time for realism, are we all not working in a voluntary capacity. Would we all not want to see all true gaels enter Croke Park on All Ireland final day. Monaghan County Board could have let a little pragmatism rule here.

Congrats - Certainly at a time when we feel we have few friends on Monaghan County Board we are delighted to have one of our own elected to the position of County Secretary at County Convention last night . We congratulate you Alish on this achievement. We know your capabilities will see you fulfill that role to the highest level. May I also take this opportunity to congratulate a very good friend of our Club Pauric Duffy on his appointment as Ard Stiurthoir of the GAA. Pauric in his first interview spoke and indeed in his address to convention last night spoke of the importance the role of the Club is in the GAA. He said the Club will be at the top of his Agenda as Director General, heartening words indeed. Congratulations also to our County team on the progression made this year throughout the championship. They made a gloomy summer brighter for all Monaghan GAA fans . Lets hope Banty, Adrian and co can go another step up the ladder and capture an Ulster title in 2008. Cormac Connolly attained a position on CCC and we congratulate him on that. Cormac took over the role as public relations officer after the AGM last year. He referred to it as having been demoted in a cabinet reshuffle but was happy enough to keep the state van. Cormac does an excellent job as PRO and keeps all members up to date on all club activities through club notes and club newsletter.

In Appreciation - I want to thank all those of you who give so generously of your time to this great Club of ours. I know the Secretary will have acknowledged the very many who contribute so much in time ,energy and expertise. From lining out pitches ,mowing the grass, washing jerseys, selling totto ,helping at bingo, making sandwiches ,providing refreshments after games, organising Scor, participating in Scor, organising and helping out duing the Sports festival weekend, team mentors and coaches at Senior and juvenile level, car park attendants, fas workers, umpires and linesmen team medics, shop attendants, bar personnel, professional members who generously give of their time to help with maintainance etc the list is just endless. We as a Club are much indebted to all who fall into one and many of those categories. You are the people who make up our club, you are the people who are Sean Mac Diarmada G A C . I want to encourage more members to get involved, we constantly need new faces so please come forth and be part of it.

Sympathy - This time last year the tragedy that hit our community was to the forefront of our minds, one year later its still a poignant memory. 2007 unfortunately saw another tragedy hit the Hagan family when Stephen and Louise lost their son Arron to a sudden and unexpected illness. Our sympathy goes to the family and to all members and friends who lost loved ones in 2007.

In Conclusion - On a personal note I want thank the Officers and members of the Executive Committee for their commitment to the cause in 2007.Thanks to our ever efficient Secretary Sean, our treasured treasurer Mary, genial Gerry, contentious Cormac and super Seamus who work closely with me on the day to day running of the Club. Thanks to Lilian and my family for their continuous support. Finally thanks to the Sean Mac Diarmada Gaelic Athletic Club. It facilitates a place for us to meet, to deliberate and plan ,to play, to make new friends and to maintain friendships, to cheer and shout for our teams and most of all to support and be there for each other as a thriving and supportive community. We must however continue to build and strive to improve on and off the pitch. We as the club executive will endeavor to lead the way. That may not always be visible but to quote a former American President ‘real leadership is doing what is right when no one is watching’. We need everyones support over the next few years as we embark on a major development project. There has never been a victory without a battle. Let the battle commence. Finally I want to wish all our members and friends a very happy Christmas and peace, health and prosperity in 2008.

Devastating Seans secure vital league points
Harte Peat Intermediate Football League
Seans 1-12
Monaghan Harps 0-09

The Seans put up one of their best performances of the season in front of their own supporters to record a six point win over near neighbours Monaghan Harps. The team showed remarkable bouncebackability after last week’s disappointment of a one point defeat to Emyvale having led for the entire hour. From goalkeeper to corner forward this was a determined and clinical effort by Sean McDermotts who led from the first minute and never once let the league leaders into the game. A brief period of pressure from the Harps was brilliantly ended with a goal from all but fifty yards out. Derek McMahon launched the ball into the square after a free was given for a foul on Christopher Connolly. The goal signaled the end of the Harps challenge who in truth never really got going and from their perspective it is a performance that they won’t want to dwell on much as they prepare for a certain semi final.

Up front was the key in this match as McDermotts displayed accuracy that was so evidently missing against Emyvale. The basics were being done right and that was the foundation for the victory. Shane O’Neill showed strength in character as well as physical strength as he shrugged off the challenge of Ashley White on a number of occasions. Nigel Lynch was alert as ever and took his scores very well, the highlight a fine finish from a tight angle after some impressive inter-linking. Martin Kierans put in an asserted effort but was carried off with a nasty looking ankle injury after a terrible challenge in midfield. We certainly wish Martin a speedy recovery and hope to see him back soon. His younger brother Paddy was a constant migrane to the Harps defence and was a key player in this win. Captain Gary McEntee put in a very good performance in the middle of the field and was on the score board twice with two well taken points. Christopher Connolly partnered him extremely well in the middle while at the back the experienced head of Micheal McGuinness guided his defence as they barricaded the Harps forwards. Emlyn Clerkin was alert as ever in the full back position and behind him Mark Keogh made some brilliant stops and was consistent with his kick outs. Barry McGuinness was another player who was in determined mood setting up a number of attacks and breaking into his opponents half much to the annoyance of his marker. The whole team from one to fifteen put in an impressive performance, one that the supporters knew they were capable of.

With two games left Seans are far from safe and still need to take at least two points to be sure of retaining their Intermediate status. Drumhowan are in a more difficult position being three points behind ourselves with only two games to go. It looks set to be a rollercoaster finish.

Hammer blow as Seans are caught at the death
Intermediate League
Emyvale 1-09
Seans 1-08

Sean McDermotts are facing an uphill battle to retain their Intermediate status after a one point defeat to fellow strugglers Emyvale. A goal six minutes into injury time saw the North Monaghan side snatch what seemed like an unlikely victory. The goal was a hammer blow to the lads who have trained so hard for this match over the last few weeks and indeed the loyal supporters who looked shell-shocked after the final whistle sounded. Emyvale hadn’t led once for the entire match and it was Seans who looked hungrier and more determined on the ball. However their lack of composure in front of goal was the telling factor at the end. They simply wasted far too many opportunities in front of goal and were ultimately punished in the cruelest of fashion. It now looks like the final three games will be a relegation battle between the bottom three teams; Emyvale, Drumhowan and Seans. Emyvale have a home tie against Cremartin and then two difficult trips to Corduff and Monaghan Harps. Drumhowan have a slightly easier finish with a home tie against Truagh, an away match against Rockcorry and finally a home match against Cremartin. The Seans are left with an ominous looking finish to the season with home ties against Monaghan Harps and Truagh and then an away trip to intermediate champions Tyholland. In the first of these fixtures Seans play Monaghan Harps at home this Saturday at 3pm. Credit must go to the players who have put in the effort at training and so all supporters are asked to come out and get behind them on Sunday in what promises to be a cracking local derby.

Disaster as Seans hit self destruct button
Intermediate League
Seans 1-09
Cremartin 1-10

Sean McDermotts terrible run of form continued on Sunday last (September, 9th) when they went down by the narrowist of margins to a never say die Cremartin outfit. Playing with a good breeze behind them in the first half Cremartin were playing a very attacking brand of football that was paying dividends. A well taken goal by Damien Larkin and a couple of points without reply put Seans back in control just before half time. There was renewed hope amongst the supporters that the team could go out in the second half and utilise the breeze to put Cremartin out of sight.

Remarkably the complete opposite happened. Midfield began to squander possession and our backline made error after error, gifting the Shamrocks on a number of occassions. The dreaded goal came mid-way through the second half after some more sloppy play from the home side. Seans then went from bad to worse with a red mist decending on two of our players, both receiving their marching orders. Seans still had the advantage on the scoreboard but it was Cremartin who had the hunger and they put the nail in the coffin with three points late into the second half.

With only four games left and three of these against top table opposition our Intermediate stauts is clearly in jeopardy. There is now a decent break of one month until the next fixture and this can be an important time to put the effort in at training and try and re-build team morale. A win against Emyvale is vital otherwise Junior football will be staring us right in the face.

Larkin on Fire
Intermediate Football Championship
Emyvale 0-09
Seans 0-15

Damien Larkin staged at a points scoring exhibition to help Sean McDermotts resurrect their intermediate football championship hopes at the expense of Emyvale in this very entertaining and at times exciting losers section match in Clontibret.

Larkin was on fire particularly in the first half as he fired over a succession of points, mostly from frees, from a range of distances and angles to help his side lay the foundations for an overall deserved victory. Larkin scored nine points in the first half and finished up with a total of 11 and it was his contribution that kept Sean McDermotts on course. Larkin’s accuracy had Sean McDermotts nine points in front by the break and the result almost assured against an Emyvale team for whom very little went right in that first period.

They were forced to make a number of changes before the start and they never imposed themselves on the game in any sector with Larkin ruthlessly punishing them at every opportunity. Emyvale came out for the second half with a re-jigged formation that saw Declan Callery introduced to the attack, Robert McHugh switching to midfield and John Flannery starting to blossom in his new role at centre halfback. Brendan McKenna began to impose himself in midfield and by the 20th minute they had the margin down to four points. A brilliant save by Darren McArdle in the Sean McDermott’s goal on Gerard McCaffrey helped keep Sean McDermott in the match at this stage and they still had to rely on Damien Larkin to push them through to victory after they had been reduced to 14 players with the dismissal of Barry McGuinness on a straight red card following a tackle on Brendan O’Brien. Emyvale themselves were to finish the match with 14 players when full forward Gerard McCaffrey was dismissed in the final minutes following an alleged verbal altercation with the referee but by Sean McDermotts had done enough to ensure victory.

Ulster's challenge ends with Monaghan
Bank of Ireland SFC
Kerry 1-12
Monaghan 1-11

Reigning All-Ireland champions Kerry, who only took the lead for the first time in the 69th minute of the game, have rarely received such a massive fright. Monaghan, bubbling with enthusiasm, slaves to the work ethic and bonded by immense courage took the Kingdom to the brink but could not quite push them into the abyss. Even Kerry manager Pat O'Shea admitted afterwards that "Monaghan deserved to get something out of this game". And coming from a Kingdom source, that is high praise indeed. Monaghan's resolve, discipline and clever strategy, brilliantly blueprinted by manager Seamus McEnaney - ensured that Kerry could only breathe easy when they were back in the sanctuary of their dressing room. For most of the game they faced a Monaghan bombardment, and although the six weeks that have elapsed since their Munster final win over Cork could explain ring rustiness, it was the ferocity and intensity of their opponent's challenge that almost saw them topple. In a team of heroes, Monaghan's Rory Woods, Eoin Lennon, Dick Clarkin, John Paul Mone, and Vincent Corey stood out while Thomas Freeman was at his impish best in attack.

By the seventh minute, the Kerry early warning system had been activated after Freeman had drilled in a penalty and complimented an early Woods point with the first of his own to leave his side in front by 1-2 to 0-1.

But by the 21st minute deadlock ensued when Mike Frank Russell and Colm Cooper set about trimming Monaghan's sails only for the Ulster side to steal ahead again at 1-5 to 0-5.

But Kerry's experience, intelligent passing and pressure on the ball carrier saw stalemate again at the break (1-5 to 0-8). Monaghan's positive approach carried over into the second half but there was a temporary blip when skipper Declan O'Sullivan swept in their goal after a 57th-minute knockdown by Kieran Donaghy who was well placed throughout by John Paul Mone.

Even then, Monaghan responded with interest, Freeman and Paul Finlay steering over points before Kerry boss O'Shea played his trump card by bringing in substitutes Bryan Sheehan, Sean O'Sullivan, Tommy Griffin and Darren O'Sullivan.

Of these, Sheehan made the most crucial impact. In the 65th minute he hoisted over a point from play, repeating the feat two minutes later to bring the sides level at 1-11 each.

And when long-serving Tomas O Se weaved through to fist over what proved to be the winning point with three minutes left it was the ultimate heartbreaker from Monaghan's perspective.

They had given their all and come agonisingly close to turning a good championship campaign into a genuine sporting fairytale.

U14s continue impressive form with gargantuan semi-final victory
Under 14
Seans 3-13
Killanny 1-16

Killanny and Sean Mc Dermotts served up a wonderful advertisement for juvenile football in a pulsating under 14 division 2 semi-final clash at Threemilehouse on Tuesday night last. Trailing by two points with regulation time up, the home side looked like they had pilfered a final appearance when Shane Hagan blasted to the Killanny net from close range. The Killanny youngsters who had set the pace for most of this thriller were not about to throw in the towel, up stepped star performer Michael Vernon to land a glorious point his fourth of the game to force the tie into extra time. Seans opened the scoring with a point from James Connolly in the second minute, from their next attack the visitors were on level terms from a Cillian Leegan free. Ronan Duffy split the posts from close range in the tenth minute and Kevin Crawley from an acute angle struck a glorious point after beating two Seans defenders out on the left flank. Seans were struggling in most area especially down the middle where the bigger Killanny ladsRonan Duffy, Tiernan Duffy Andrew Merrin and Michael Vernon were using their height and weight advantage to great effect, and when Vernon raised another white flag the locals had it all too do. A few positional switches had immediate impact, Shane Larkin reduced the deficit with a point in the twentieth minute and the same player was on the end of field length move two minutes later to rattle the Killanny net with an unstoppable shot giving the agile Declan Mc Gleew no chance. Started by Conor Mc Elroy when he broke up a promising Killanny attack and involving Adrian Prunty, Jamie Mc Elvaney, James Connolly, Shane Hagan who parted to the speedy Larkin few in the big attendance will have seen a better score. James Connolly converted a close in free to put the Seans two up with twenty five minutes played. Killanny were stung into action and Michael Vernon rallied his teammates with a superb effort after carrying and retaining possession well despite the close attention of several Seans defenders. Killanny's big midfielder Andrew Merrin launched a long range strike to level thing. Merrin was again on hand after great work by Niall Grimes and Dermot Leegan to lay the ball off to Ronan Duffy who duly gave his side the advantage as the referee blew the half time whistle. Half time score Seans 1 - 3 Killanny 0 - 7 On the resumption both sides made positional switches in an effort to wrest the initiative, Killanny were immediately on the offensive but their first attempts yielded nothing until Michael Vernon found the range in the second minute. A minute later James Connolly converted a Seans free from the twenty metre line, almost immediately Tiernan Duffy had a similar score for Killanny. Connolly was accurate again from another placed ball in the fifth minute but when Ronan and Tiernan Duffy combined with Kevin's Mc Mahon and Crawley to set up Cian Kindlon who eluded the clutches of his marker brilliantly to rifle the ball to the Sean's net the Geraldines must have thought they were on their way to the final, for Sean's supporters that thought must surely have crossed their minds. Shane Larkin on free taking duty for Seans from the left wing raised a white flag in the ninth minute, Killanny extended their lead with points from Andrew Boylan in the eleventh minute and goal scorer Kindlon popped up a minute later this time raising a white flag from an awkward angle.

This was now a titanic contest Killanny in pole position and favourite to reach the finish line, Mc Dermotts trying all the knew to prevent them getting there, Shane Larkin reduced the deficit with a well hit free in the sixteenth minute. Five minutes later James Connolly had another minor for Seans a free out on the right. Pierce Murphy was introduced for Conor Kearns who had played himself to a stand still as he tried to shackles Killanny's corner forward Kevin Crawley. Dwayne Mc Caffrey showing tremendous tenacity released Adrian Prunty and his long well placed defensive clearance found Shane Larkin who managed to escape the close attention of his marker to land a gem of a point from play to narrow the gap to two point with only a couple of minutes remaining. In the twenty fifth Killanny keeper Michael Mc Gleew did brilliantly to save from Larkin but the in rushing Shane Hagan was quickest to react as the rebound fell kindly into his path and he made no mistake from two yards, giving his side the slenderest of leads for the first time since the twenty third minute of the opening half. Now in injury time, possession was vital. A well placed clearance from McGleew found Conor Vernon who carried before parting to Tiernan Duffy his high speculative lob into the Seans goalmouth was cleared but only as far as Michael Vernon. He brought cheer of delight from the big band of travelling Killanny faithful as he struck with some conviction to land an equalising point, nothing more than his team deserved forcing the game to extra time. Full time score Seans 2 - 9 Killanny 1 - 12. Still nothing separated the sides after the first ten minute moiety of extra time. Shane Hagan opened Seans account in the second minute with a point from play, and Shane Larkin landed a second for the home side half way through this period, a twenty metre free out on the left. In between Cian Kindlon had leveled things for Killanny and Enda Mc Quillan in the Seans goal made a tremendous save injuring himself in the process before Kindlon completed his brace in ninth minute to leave it all square after and hours football. In the final period Seans drew first blood a long range point from midfielder Mc Elvaney. As had been the pattern throughout although tiring now both sides continued to work hard for that decisive score. Killanny pressed and the Seans gaol had a couple of narrow escapes, James Mc Aleer and Pierce Murphy often relieving the pressure. That decisive score when it did come came against the run of play a Killanny attack was thwarted by the combined effort of Dwayne Mc Caffrey and James Mc Aleer, Adrian Prunty was quickest to gather the breaking ball he found Mathew Mc Cabe and his pass to target man Larkin wasn't cleared but again fell kindly to the every alert Shane Hagan his deceptive side step left him with time and space to coolly plant the ball into the Killanny net to give his side a four point cushion. In the eighth minute Shane Larkin added another point from play, but the Killanny youngsters to their credit never gave up, powered on by Tiernan Duffy he reduced the gap with a point in the tenth minute. When the same player added another three minutes later to leave only a goal between the side, The home supporters were extremely anxious and nervous as the Seans goal was laid siege to in those closing minutes. For locals and visitors the sound of the referee whistle ending the contest brought relief and disappointment in equal measure It's a pity one team had to loose as this was as marvellous game of football and mentors from both Sean Mc Dermotts and Killanny can be justifiably proud of the fare these youngsters served up

The panels on duty were:
Seans; Enda Mc Quillan, Conor Mc Elroy, Stephen Mc Carron, Dwyane Mc Caffrey, Adrian Prunty, Conor Kearns, Jamie Mc Elvaney (0 - 1), Shane Larkin (1 -6), Mathew Mc Cabe, James Mc Aleer James Connolly (0 - 5), Shane Hagan (2 - 1) Colin Mc Elvaney, Pierce Murphy, Conor Mc Cormick,

Seans shine in dull conditions
Seans 1-12
Drumhowan 0-9

The Senior team overcame tough conditions but not much else on Sunday last (March 18th). A strong wind and rain swept Parc Sean Mhic Diarmada greeted the two sides and indeed the supporters, one or two of them looking like they were having a bit of bad weather themselves after the St Patrick's day celebrations the day before. After the disappointment of the previous defeat to Corduff it was very important for the team with home advantage to get back to winning ways against Drumhowan. Nigel McQuillan bagged his first of hopefully many goals in the season and it was to prove a decisive score with Drumhowan struggling to get back in the game after that. Fintan McKenna got a point that could be an early contender for score of the season when he smashed one over from all but forty yards. It was also refreshing to see so many new faces in the squad being mentored all the time by the more experienced players. More new developments were also on display off the field with the construction of the new wall on the bank side of the pitch. This is part of a number of future developments that will make for more comfortable viewing for our loyal supporters.

Gala Banquet
The annual gala banquet held in our sports centre on Sunday night last was a tremendous success and a most enjoyable occasion. It was great to see so many of our special guests the '67-'69 playing panel able to attend, many of them travelling long distances to be present. Mickey Moran braved the arctic conditions too, not to disappoint, and in his after dinner speech he said facilities and successes were important for community spirit, but the most important aspect of club involvement was friendships and people. We should he said never loose sight of the individual. A word of thanks to all who helped make the night the success it was, patrons for their excellent time keeping, allowing proceeding to get under was as scheduled. The entertainers, caterer, music maker, volunteers from the U16 and minor squad, and the photographers hopefully elsewhere in this edition space will allow their pictorial records of the occasion to be published.

Mickey Moran for Sean McDermotts
Renowned inter county coach Mickey Moran is the star attraction and guest of honour at the Sean Mac Diarmada Annual Gala Banquet. For the former Mayo manager and All-Ireland winning Derry coach this will be his first visit to the north Monaghan club. Currently taking time out from the inter-county scene there is little the vastly experienced Moran doesn’t know about coaching, he is sure to have a captive audience on Sunday Night next 18th March when the Seans faithful get together to celebrate in their impressive club social centre. As well as the Derry man there will be considerable local interest as the club fetes the playing panels of forty year ago the triple Dr Ward cup and junior double winning sides of ’67 –’69 captained by Eddie Mc Carron, Seamus Mulligan and Mickey Mc Mahon. All are sure to get rousing receptions as those glorious exploits are recalled. There are many presentations to be made on the night, but it’s The Mc Entee Award that will attract most interest and attention. Who will be the recipient this year? Presented to the Player’s Player, this is a much sought after award, as its fellow teammates votes that determines the winner. Patrons and guest are reminded that the formalities begin at nine o’ clock sharp. Club Secretary Sean McElvaney the Master of Ceremonies for the evening requests that all seats are occupied before the scheduled start time.

Brian and PJ join the elite of Life Presidents
At our annual meeting recently two very loyal and long serving members of the club were elevated to the position of life presidents. They join a small elite and august group who are the clubs standard bearers, their exalted status, recognition of their exceptional contribution to Cumman Sheáin Mhic Dhiarmada. The latest additions to this echelon are PJ Murphy, and Brian Sherdian. Pictorial evidence admittedly black and white exists verifying PJ's involvement in football in the parish several years before our club came into existence, it was only natural that in '61 he threw his considerable know how behind the new club. His tenure since then as a member of the executive committee has been unrivalled up to last year when he handed the baton to next generation…son Enda. Brian's involvement with the Seans began shortly after his return from England in the late '60's he too has been an almost ever present member of the executive holding the position of vice chairman for much of that time.

AGM Details Released
At the recent AGM under the new club constitution adopted last year; only the principal officers were elect. An Cathoirleach has reshuffled his backbenchers. Enda Murphy is promoted to Chairperson of the Youth committee, Nigel Lynch's prowess with a pen has been recognised and he has been installed as secretary to that body. Another dynamic duo in the making, charged with developing the most important section in the club, we can look forward to the unbridled exuberance and enthusiasm of youth with these two lads at the helm. Over the coming days Enda will be scrutinising CV's as he puts his administration and coaching jigsaw together, anyone interested in becoming involved in our youth setup should contact Enda for inclusion in that jigsaw. Cormac Connolly has been striped of the youth portfolio but in an obvious conciliatory gesture has been handed public relations. Surviving the shake-up are long time club servant Gerry Lynch who retains his Development brief, but only because he convinced the Boss that the first phase of pitch side construction was on schedule to definitely commence in early March… we'll wait and see. Another survivor retaining his dual outgoing brief of team selector and executive liaison officer is Colm Mc Mahon but he too will be hoping that the commitment promised on Friday night is delivered on, and will be enough to see him trough the full term.

  • Drama as Seans 'snatch' victory in Aghabog
    Harte Peat Intermediate Football League
    Aghabog 0-16
    Seans 2-11

We all left this one initially thinking it was two points we could have won. We did. As the Seans faithful were discussing a very enjoyable draw the ref was informing players on the field of battle that it was a one point victory for McDermotts. Well there's a first for everything! Incredibly the ref's notebook had the score one point in arrears from the scoreboard that we all took as gospel. And that gave us a win. As news filtered through of the drama via phone calls, text messages and joyful chat in the plex it made the Sunday a bit more enjoyable for many in both Parishes. The game itself was a very tight affair as is usually the case between these sides. Gary Larkin scored yet another goal for the club. This cracker just one of a number of vital goals he has bagged in a glittering club career. While Gary may unwillingly be regarded as a veteran by many it was the young Nigel McQuillan up front who caught the eye. He got the second goal that had Seans in control and ahead by four points at half time and would surely have won the Man of the Match if such an award was up for grabs. Overall it wasn't the perfect performance but a win all the same. With Aghabog winning the reverse fixture in Threemilehouse back in June it is indeed a good win for the club. There are two more games to complete an injury ridden season and with safety guaranteed it should give the supporters a couple of easy, relaxing games to enjoy!

Bright Start to League Marred by McKenna Injury
    Harte Peat Intermediate Football League
    Seans 1-10
    Clones 1-06

Sean's promotion ambitions got off to a good start against clones on Sunday last (April 2nd). The home side found a little bit extra in the tank and pulled away from the visitors to win by four points. This was the first senior game on the brand new pitch and it was nice to start with a win. Hopefully we can remain 'unbeaten' at home for the remainder of the season! Unfortunately the victory was marred by a nasty neck injury to Fintan McKenna who was hospitalised as a result. Hopefully Fintan will have a seepy recovery. It adds to an ever growing injury list at the club just as we thought it couldn't get any worse. The current injury list includes Niall McGuirk and Conor McElvaney who will both be absent for the rest of the season. On a more positive note there was an impressive Senior debut for young Noel Rice in corner back. His performance bodes well for his senior career and he is sure to give many a forward headaches this year.

The highlight of this game was probably a spectacular goal by Colin Murphy which is already a contender for goal of the season! Seans face Carrickmacross away on the 16th April where we hope to have a few players back. As ever this fixture should prove to be a tight, hard fought affair so all support would be welcome.

    Team:
    J Treanor, C Connolly, E Clerkin, N Rice, F McKenna, P Kieran, N Lynch, C Connolly, G McEntee, A Larkin, D Larkin, P McPhillips, B McGuinness, D Treanor, M Kieran, Subs- E Coyle, Colin Murphy, Ciaran Murphy

Championship draw sets up mouth watering encounter!
    Gormley uPVC Intermediate Football Championship
Monaghan's 2006 Championship draws were made at Monday night's County Committee meeting and it set up a number of enticing games including our own draw against Doohamlet. The blues have been there or there abouts in Intermediate football over the last number of years and fell at the last hurdle last year in the Championship final against Inniskeen. McDermotts have a number of injured players who are set to be out for most of the forthcoming season. Conor McElvaney who suffered a broken leg in the final game of 2005 is not expected back for at least six months with his brother Stephen possibly requiring surgery on a groin problem. Gary Larkin hasn't trained with a knee injury and Niall McGuirk may not be back this season with a cruciate injury. So the new management will be looking towards players like Damien and Adrian Larkin and the pacy James Treanor up front. Christpher Connolly is expected back and he will boost the midfield area along with either Derek McMahon or Gary McEntee. At the back Seans will welcome back the experienced Eamonn Coyle and John McConnon but will sorely miss Paul Acheson who has retired. For Doohamlets part they will look towards the two McManus brothers whose pace, skill and accuracy are sure give Seans plenty of problems. Seans will hope for a quick return to Senior ranks but as the first round suggest the road to success is sure to be a very testing one.

    Seans set for Intermediate return
    Credit Union Senior Football League
    Seans 0-09
    Ballybay 2-11
Seans's three year stint playing Senior Fottball came to an end on Sunday last when Ballybay eased to a 7 point victory in the relegation play-off decider. Sean's hopes of winning this game were hampered early on when Conor Mc Elvaney sustained a broken ankle after only 5 minutes play. Its a serious injury to pick up and we wish Conor a speedy recovery. Things got worse for Mc Dermotts when they lost another crucial player, Niall Mc Guirk who was carried off with a knee injury. Seans battled on but it was Ballybay who had the fire power and they took control in the second half to secure Senior survival. Unfortunately for Seans injuries have been part and parcel of this season but unlike last year the final hurdle was just a step too far. So Its back to Intermediate Football next season where Seans will re-ignite old rivalries with Aghabog and Eire Og not to mention Monaghan Harps who got promoted from Junior. If Seans can keep injury free they will certainly be looking to make a quick return to Senior ranks.

Truagh defeat means relegation play off
    Credit Union Senior Football League
    Seans 0-07
    Truagh 0-11
After a much improved team performance against Ballybay the week before Sean's supporters were bitterly disappointed as they left Pairc Sean Mhic Dhiarmada on Sunday last having watched their team go down to Truagh all too easily. Truagh have had the upper hand over Seans since their promotion but the visitors would have been surpirsed at the manner and ease of their victory considering the home side's desperate situation in the League. Truagh looked marginally the better side it must be said. But it was their hunger and determination to secure a semi final spot that was the main difference in this encounter. In truth Seans were never in the game and with Ballybay all the time running up a big score against Magheracloone things never looked too promising for the supporters on the hill who were braving the chilly weather. But its not all doom and gloom with the team having one more bite at the cherry in a relegation play-off with Ballybay. Clonitbret is the venue, a ground that Mc Dermotts have fond memories of. They lifted their first ever Intermediate Championship trophy there back in 2002 and then did the County proud the following year by winning the Ulster Intermediate championship at the same ground. Ballybay will be enstalled as slight favourites given that they will have the momentum from their impressive victory over Magheracloone. Seans will hope to bring a good support with them as they vie for safety once more. Throw in at Clontibret is at 2pm.

    Seans need win against Carrick
    Credit Union Senior Football League
After the long break Sean Mc Dermotts are back in action this weekend when they face already relegated Carrickmacross. The Emmets have had a season to forget with only four points on the board and they will be hoping for a moral boosting victory when Seans visit on Sunday morning. Seans welcome back Conor Mc Elvaney from injury but there are doubts over Gary Larkin and Stephen Mc Elvaney. Seans have been out of sorts recently and after a bright start to their campaign lost five games on the trot, two against Scotstown. With only three games remaining the importance of this one is clear so it promises to be a very entertaining game that could go right down to the wire. If Seans manage to control midfield and provide plenty of ball to their pacy forwards they should prove too strong for the Emmets. Niall Mc Guirk and Gary Mc Entee will be central figures and Conor Mc Elvaney will add some much needed pace into the attack. Last season went down to the last game against Scotstown when a goal in the dying minutes gave Seans a one point victory and saved them from the drop. Their loyal supporters will be hoping for more of the same come Sunday.

Ray dumps Seans out of the Fray
    ACC Bank Senior Football Championship
    Sean McDermotts 3-09
    Tyholland 1-20

Raymond Ronaghan was on top form in this ACC Bank Senior Championship qualifier played in ideal conditions at Scotstown on Sunday evening 14th August. The former County man was simply on fire notching up a personal tally of 1-8 and putting an end to a vastly depleted Sean Mc Dermotts championship hopes in 2005. It had many neutral supporters wondering 'what if' as ironically he was dropped from the County scene just before the Tyrone game. Even a vastly experienced defender like Sean's Paul Acheson found him difficult to handle and while a number of his scores came from frees its obvious that he would have been a vital addition to the County against the red handers. But thats all in the past now and Ronaghan showed that he had definitely put that saga behind him with Monaghan manager Seamus Mc Eneaney watching from the stands.

It was Sean Mc Dermotts who got out of the traps quickest when Damien Larkin punched to the net after 9 mins to put his side in front by just a single point. The good start was not built on by Mc Dermotts and in fact that was the only time they led. Tyholland looked a much better side than their League position suggests and they will certainly be hoping for more of the same in the rest of that competition. The Seans were without the services of a number of key players including Paddy Kierans and Gary Mc Entee who were both suspended as well as Conor Mc Elvaney, James Treanor, Conor Connolly, Johnny Mc Connon and Christopher Connolly all of whom are on the injury list. That said Seans didn't go down without a fight and a frantic finish saw them score 1-2 in the final minutes but it wasn't enough.

Tyholland went into the break with a 1-10 to 1-4 lead after Ronaghan had smashed the Seans net on 25 minutes. He added another point three minutes later and already Mc Dermotts were facing an uphill struggle. In the second half Tyholland continued in similar fashion and although Niall Mc Guirk and Derek Mc Mahon marshalled mid-field well for Seans it was failure to retain possession that gifted their opponents scoring chances and after 23 mins of the second half Tyholland had surged to a fifteen point advantage. Rather than throwing in the towel Seans kept fighting and rallied to leave a slightly more respectable scoreline to what was at times a one sided encounter.

Big turn around needed in Championship
    ACC Bank Senior Football Championship
    Sean McDermotts v. Tyholland
It’s the last chance for Sean McDermotts and Tyholland as they lost their opening championship matches back in May.
On that occasion Tyholland were involved in a local derby match with Truagh which Truagh won with 16 points to spare. They were playing the same opposition in the league last Sunday and were on the wrong end of a seven points margin although the return of Gary McQuaid from county team duty should certainly help. Raymond Ronaghan is another key player and if he produces a big game it could make the difference.
Sean McDermott’s came up against county champions Magheracloone in their opening game in the championship and suffered a three points reversed in Aughnamullen on May 15th.
They have been picking up some promising results in the league of late but came a cropper against Clontibret on Sunday last with 15 points separating them at the finish, so Sean McDermotts will be looking for a better return this time around. Throw-in for this one is in Scotstown on Sunday evening at 7.00p.m.

    Tyholland 3-13
    Seans 0-17

On Sunday evening last we made the short journey to tyholland to take on the home side in the Senior league. On this extremely warm evening both teams started brightly exchanging points in the early stages of this contest, the Seans scores coming from James Treanor, Mark Keogh + Damien Larkin. Tyholland had the ball in the net shortly after this after a well worked move and latched on another point swiftly afterwards to take a 1 – 4 to 0 – 3 lead. Seans responded well to this initial Tyholland barrage with another point a piece for Larkin + Treanor before disaster struck again in the McDermotts defence with the ball nestling in the corner of the net. This would not be the end of the Tyholland scoring as they notched up another 3 points and one free in the first half. Seans responding with four points of teir own one Larkin free followed in quick succession by two points from James Treanor and a good long range score from Stephen McElvaney. Goal chances for McDermotts were at a premium in the first half. One that did fall the way of Treanor was blasted over the bar for a point.

The game recommenced with the Seans upping their game in the opening half of the second period. Four early points from the Seans narrowed the gap significantly as a new desire seemed to enter the team. Scores from Treanor, Keogh and frees from Larkin + Derek McMahon were responded to by just a single score from a free by Tyholland. This seemed to spark Tyholland back to life with scores being exchanged in the following minutes with Larkin and McMahon again on the spot to convert the dead ball opportunities. The game was taken away from from McDermotts in the last five minutes when the concession of yet another goal turning the game back in Tyhollands favour and out of sight of the Seans. Two late Seans points were not enough to get them back in the game as well as Larkin smashing the ball against the base of the post.

    Team on duty- D McArdle, P Acheson,E Clerkin, E McElvaney, C Connolly, P Kieran, S McElvaney(0-1), D McMahon(0-3), N McGuirk, N Lynch, A Larkin, M Keogh (0-2), J Treanor(0-5) , G Larkin , D Larkin (0-6) Sub- J McConnon, D McGuirk

    True Grit
Credit Union Senior Football League - Saturday 30th July at Truagh
    Truagh 1-08
    Seans 0-09

On a bright and extremely warm evening at St Mellans park the Seans came out with all guns blazing and shot into an early lead. Scores in the opening minutes from Damien Larkin and Conor McElvaney showed the intent of the McDermotts side who seemed in determined mood. Further scores from Damien Larkin and Derek McMahon, both of which from dead balls, put Seans into a 4 point lead. Truagh rallied after these scores and showed their grit and determination by hitting 4 unanswered points in the ten minutes leading up to the interval to draw level. The last word of the half went to the Seans as Conor McElvaney confidently slotted to restore the lead by thye slenderist of margins at the interval.

The second half started in a similar vain as the first, with Patrick Kieran driving forward from his centre half back birth to send over a splendid point from long range. This score seemed to cause yet another Truagh fight back. A point for the homester’s was quickly followed up with the net rippling, which came shortly after they had missed a gilt edged goal opportunity. Damien Larkin responded in style with a well taken score but indiscipline in the McDermotts defence cost them dearly resulting with two Truagh points from placed balls and another from play. Larkin again struck back with two p oints from frees but it proved not to be enough as time ran out in a game that was there for the taking.

    Team on duty- D McArdle, P Acheson, S McElvaney, E Clerkin, M McGuinness, P Kieran(0-1), E McElvaney, C McElvaney (0-2), N McGuirk, M Kieran, A Larkin, D McMahon (0-1), J Treanor , G Larkin , D Larkin (0-5) Sub- C Connolly for E McElvaney, D Treanor (0-1) for M Kieran.

    Could have, Should have

    Scotstown 1-09
    Seans 0-09

Sean Mc Dermotts made the short journey to Scotstown on the back of a brilliant one point win away to Latton on Friday night but came out on the wrong end of a 1-9 to 9 points scoreline against an in-form Scotstown. It wasn't a great performance from a side that were clearly tired after a gruelling game away to Latton 40 hours earlier. However the Seans still managed to create the most chances in the game apart from the first ten minutes where they found themselves 1-4 to 0-1 down. It was the worst possible start imaginable and one that we did not recover from. Scotstown's danger man Nicholas Corrigan missed the game due to County committments but it didn't matter as Donal Caulfield more than filled his boots hitting a goal and two points in the first five minutes. Brian Mc Ginnity and James O'hara added two more and the visitors looked like they were heading for a bit of a drubbing. Eventually Seans got of the mark, to the relief of the supporters, with James Treanor slotting over a free. Conor Mc Elvaney and Derek Mc mahon reduced the margin further and suddenly it was Seans who were in the assendency. Seans began to dominate mid field with Niall Mc Guirk and Conor Mc Elvaney working hard but it was up front that was causing ourselves problems and chance after chance disappeared.

Scotstown were out first for the second half with the scoreboard reading 1-5 to 0-4 to the home side. Danny Clerkins pep talk clearly had an effect on the players as they quickly got back to within one point of Scotstown with points from Damien Larkin, Adrian Larkin and James Treanor. We failed to build on this hitting a number of wides before Nall Mc Carville and Brian Mc Ginnity restored a three point lead for Sean Mc Cagues side. Dermot Mc Crudden slotted over another after Seans missed two more great chances to leave four in it. It wasn't to be Seans Day as Phillip Maguire saved what looked to be a cetain goal and Damien Larkin fired over a free in what was to be the last kick of the game. While Seans will be disappointed to have lost the game there were a number of positive aspects including Conor Mc Elvaney's performance in mid-field. Seans face Ballybay away on Wednesday week and will hope to have a number of injured players back for what will be a very tough game.

    Champions progress - just
ACC Bank Senior Football Championship - Sunday 15th May at Aughnamullen
    Hogan Stand
    Magheracloone 1-16
    Sean McDermotts 1-13

County champions Magheracloone got over the first hurdle in defence of their title when they defeated Sean McDermotts at Aughnamullen on Sunday 15th May.

This was a ding dong contest in which the Freeman brothers Tommy and Damien proved to be the difference between the sides. The well known county stars gave the impetus to Magheracloone and once again showed how difficult they are to contain. But full credit to Seans in spite of the difficulties they had to contend with they too had some very impressive performers whom Magheracloone found difficult to put the shackles on.

Among them were Damien Larkin at corner forward who proved to be a handful for the Magheracloone defence and Derek McMahon also showed his pace and skill while midfielder Conor McElvanney proved to be impressive under the high ball. Both sides also had to contend with difficulties as Magheracloone lost James Ward in the final minutes of the first half and Seans lost Paddy Kieran who was red carded ten minutes from the end.

The first 10 minutes was a even-steven affair as Magheracloone’s Tom Freeman opened with a fine point which was quickly matched by Derek McMahon.. Freeman was back on the scoring sheet and then Seans hit on the double with point from Damien Larkin and Derek McMahon to put Seans into the lead.

But it was in the final minutes of the first quarter that Magheracloone really turned it on as they sent over five points in rapid succession through Paul Kirke, Tom Freeman (3) and Paul Jones to open up a 4 point lead. Seans came back with two points through Damien Larkin but Magheracloone had the final say of the half as Damien Freeman sent over to leave the score at the break Magheracloone 0-8 Sean McDermotts0-5.
Within minutes of the turnaround Seans were back to within a point of the champions when James Treanor and sub David Treanor sent over points apiece.

But Magheracloone’s recovery was swift and decisive 2 points from James Treanor and Tom Freeman (free) followed by a Paul Jones goal. A high ball into the goal area saw Paul Jones fist it to the Sean’s net.. Magheracloones were now on a roll. Before the end of the third quarter both sides exchanged points on two occasions. Damien Larkin’s (free) was responded to by Tom Freeman while Paul Lambe responded to a Derek McMahon point. That 6 point gap stood between the sides as the game went into the last quarter and then it was dramatically cut to a single goal when Sean’s David Treanor sent the pass to corner forward Damien Larkin who took a good goal. Once again the sides swopped points twice as the game heated up towards the final stage.

The first of these exchanges saw Paudie Finnegan send over for Magheracloone and James Treanor for Seans and in the second Keith Gilsenan for Magheracloone and David Treanor for Seans. But as the game went into added on time Magheracloone kicked twice with points from a Tom Freeman free followed by a good point from Paudie Finnegan. They looked home and dry but Seans tigerishly continued to chase this game as they pulled back two points through James Treanor and a Gary Larkin free. But it was not enough to see them through.

Magheraclooone: Shane Duffy, Donal Kindlon, John McMahon, Michael Jones, Paul Farnan, Damien Freeman (0-1), Bernard Freeman, Paul Kirke (0-1), James Ward, Paul Lambe (0-1), Paul Jones (1-0), Peter Tuite, Keith Gilsenan (0-1), Paudie Finnegan (0-3), Tom Freeman (0-8).Subs used: Gerard McCaul, Pauric Kelly, Gerard Finnegan, D Dougan.

Sean McDermotts: Darren McArdle, Emmett McElvaney, Stephen McElvaney, Emlyn Clerkin, Paul Acheson, Paddy Kieran, Michael McGuinness, Niall McGuirk, Conor McElvaney, Adrian Larkin, Derek McMahon (0-3), Nigel Lynch, Damien Larkin (1-4), Gary Larkin (0-1), James Treanor (0-3). Second Half blitz stuns Blayney
Credit Union Senior Football League - Sunday 8th May at Castleblaney
    Castleblayney 1-06
    Seans 0-15

On a bright, fresh but slightly chilly morning, the Seans seemed to have forgotten that this match was an early 12:30 start , allowing Blaney run into an 1-03 to no score lead. The 29 times County champions showed their class early on with points from Kieran Tavey (2) and Demot McArdle before a defensive slip-up gifted Dermot McArdle with a goal. A wonderful point from Gary Larkin got the Seans off the mark showing his class and experience. Further points from Damien Larkin (3, 1 free), James Treanor and Paddy Kieran allied with some very wasteful Blaney forward play left the half time score 1-06 to 0-06 when really, the Faughs should have been out of sight. A very disconsolate team followed by a visably animated manager trudged up the steps toward the dressing rooms for what was sure to be a dressing down. What happened behind the Green door will never be known but the effect was certainly dramatic.

From the throw in – Niall McGuirk and Conor McElvaney took control of this sector and supplied the ammunition to a full forward line that totally mesmerised the Blaney defence. James Treanor was twisting and turning like a rabbit on steroids and Damien Larkin was back to his old self with a commanding performance running up a total of seven points in the second half six of which were from play. The half forward line of Adrian Larkin, Derek McMahon and Nigel Lynch battled for every ball and made it difficult for Blaney to build from the back as is their trademark. A very mean defensive unit excelled in thwarting every Blaney attack and even after the harsh dismissal of the Geoffrey McGonnigle look-alike full-back, Stevo McElvaney after receiving 2 yellow cards, the Blaney forward line were held scoreless for the entire second half. Indeed they only had 3 direct shots which were sent wide. Micheal McGuinness, Paddy Kieran and Emmet McElvaney pushed forward from the half back line when they could and Paul Acheson and Emyln Clerkin defended stoutly throughout. Darren McArdle never put a foot wrong either as the Seans swept to victory on a scoreline of 0-15 to 1-06. Substitutes David Treanor (0-1) and Shane O’Neill aquited themselves very well in nailing down victory in a magnificent second half performance that had the silver haired maestro again animated by the end but for an entirely different reason.

    Team on duty- D McArdle, P Acheson, S McElvaney, E Clerkin, M McGuinness, P Kieran(0-1), E McElvaney, C McElvaney, N McGuirk, A Larkin, D McMahon, N Lynch, J Treanor (0-2), G Larkin (0-1), D Larkin (0-10, 3 frees) Sub- S O’Neill for N Lynch, D Treanor (0-1) for Derek McMahon.

O'Neills goal is enough for Seans

    Seans 1-13
    Clontibret 0-15

On Wednesday night we entertained Clontibret in Threemilehouse. A blistering start by the Seans saw them take a commanding lead 0-07 – 0-03 with points from Gary Larkin (2) Damien Larkin (3 frees) James Treanor and Derek McMahon (free). Clontibret however responded like the great team they are taking control of the match with seven unanswered points to bring them to the interval leading on a scoreline of 0-07 to 0-10. Words of wisdoms from the management team were indeed required at the interval and in whatever form they came they seemed to do the trick.

The Seans team took the field for the second half with a steely determination that was clearly evident from the throw in. Half time substitute Shane O’Neill won the ball on the 40 and after playing a delightful one two with the veteran full forward Gary Larkin, he took a leaf out of Gary’s book and smashed the ball to the roof of the net. Daddy O’Neill is still smiling and rightly so. Further points Derek McMahon (free) Conor McElvaney and Damien Larkin (2 Frees) put the Seans in the driving seat with a 3 point lead The expected Clontibret fightback did indeed materialise to leave the minimum between the sides. Another 2 points were exchanged, the Seans score coming from a Derek McMahon free before Damien Larkin scored a magnificent point to strech the Seans lead to 2 points again. A late Clontibret point set up a very tense finish the Seans fighting for every ball like their lives depended on it. It was all worth it in the end as the referee Gerry McCarron blew the final whistle to confirm victory for the Seans

    Team on duty- D McArdle, C Connolly, P Acheson, E McElvaney, M McGuinness, P Kieran, A Larkin, E Clerkin, C McElvaney(0-1), N Lynch, D McMahon (3 Frees), M. Kieran, J Treanor (0-1), G Larkin (0-2), D Larkin (0-6, 5 frees) Subs- S O’Neill (1-0) for M Kieran, D Treanor for N Lynch

    Latton 2-12

On Sunday last we opened our Senior League campaign against Latton in Threemilehouse, unfortunately we did not get the result that we had been hoping for. Things looked good for us as we came out of the blocks fast with Gary Larkin latching onto a long ball into the full forward line to beat the keeper and roll the ball into the net. After this good start we failed to really build on our advantage. James Treanor pointed on 14 mins for the homesters and Damien Larkin converted a free after a foul on Gary Larkin. Latton came back at us strong after our lively opening and had a goal of their own mid way through the half after a good team move Kevin Hughes crashed the ball into the Seans net. This set the tone for the remainder of the half and Latton could well have been out of sight had they taken advantage of the clear dominance of the ball. Seans managed to notch up another score just before half time with Conor McElvaney taking a good point.
Half Time Seans 1-3 Latton 1-6
Latton failed to have the same possession of the ball in the second half as the Seans came out looking a lot more determined side. Our reward came when James Treanor bravely fisted the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net. This time we didn't sit back on the goal but pushed on with some very well taken scores from Conor McElvaney + Paddy Kieran, as well as a free from Damien Larkin. Latton did not lie down and came back with a couple of points of their own which was responded to by an Adrian Larkin point. With less than three mins remaining the wheels came off , a high centre from Latton was fisted to the net to put them two points up and from the resulting kick out they gained possession of the ball and had the umpire reaching for his white flag as a result of the kick. It was a disappointing finish to a game that could have been won. In the last moments of the game Chris Connolly suffered a serious shoulder injury to add to our troubles.

    Team on duty- D McArdle, P Acheson, S McElvaney, E McElvaney, M McGuinness, P Kieran(0-1), E Clerkin, C Connolly, N McGuirk, A Larkin(0-1), C McElvaney(0-2), D McMahon, J Treanor (1-1), G Larkin (1-0), D Larkin (0-2) Sub- S Coyle

Ballinderry show class but Seans impress
    Ulster Senior Football League
    Seans 1-07
    Ballinderry 0-12

On Sunday last we had the honour of entertaining one of the great club sides in the country, Ballinderry. On the heavy Threemilehouse pitch we got off to another quick start, as has been our trademark for this competition, opening up a four point lead after five mins of the contest. The first score coming from a free kick taken by Conor McElvaney after a foul on James Treanor. A long ball into the visitors defence resulted in Gary Larkin dispatching the ball low and hard to net. This seemed to stir the Derry club and they replied quickly with two well taken points. Damien Larkin + Paddy Kieran added further points four the Seans in this half but Ballinderry were not to be out done coming back with four points to draw level just before half time.

    Half-time- Seans 1-3 Ballinderry 0-6

The home side opened up the scoring in the 2nd half with a point by Damien Larkin quickly replied to by two Ballinderry points. At this stage the visitors were reduced to 14 men with the sending off of their corner back, this was further punished by Damien Larkin by scoring the resulting free. McDermotts failed to capitalise on this man advantage as the Derry outfit scored 4 points in the closing stages to the Seans 2. These scores coming from 2 frees from Conor McElvaney + Damien Larkin.

    Team on duty- D McArdle, E McElvaney, S McElvaney, P Acheson, M McGuinness, P Kieran (0-1), E Clerkin, C Connolly, N McGuirk, C McElvaney(0-2), D McMahon, N Lynch, J Treanor, G Larkin (1-0), D Larkin(0-4)

    Unbeaten run in Ulster continues
    Ulster Senior Football League
    Armagh Harps 0-04
    Seans 2-07

On Sunday last we made the short trip to Armagh for our forth Ulster League match. Going into the game still unbeaten the team realised that they were still very much in with a chance of progressing to the knock out stages of the competition. The game started in a lively fashion and despite a lot of early pressure and dominating large periods of possession we could not translate this into scores. The only scores that we availed of in the first half came from the inform James Treanor and Niall McGuirk. In truth we should have been home and dry at the interval missing a number of very easy chances as well as big McGuirk cracking a great effort off the crossbar.

    Half-Time: Sean’s 0-2 Armagh Harps 0-2

In the 2nd half the Sean’s kept the pressure on and gradually the scores started to fall into place with early points from both the scorers in the first half again, Treanor and McGuirk. The defining moment of the half came on 16 mins as James Treanor executed a well worked moved to net. This was quickly followed by a point from the right boot of Damien Larkin. One minute later the contest was put beyond doubt with another well worked Sean’s attack ending with Gary Larkin crashing the ball to the Armagh net. Late points from Derek McMahon made the score line even better reading for the Sean’s supporters as they made the short trip home.

    Team on duty- D McArdle, E McElvaney. S McElvaney, E Clerkin, E McQuillan, P Kieran, C Connolly, C McElvaney, N McGuirk(0-2), N Lynch, D McMahon(0-2), M McGuinness, J Treanor(1-2), G Larkin(1-0), D Larkin(0-1) Subs- D Treanor, J McConnon, R McCarron

    Seans 1-07
    Newtownhamilton 0-10

On Sunday last we made our second entrance into the Ulster League, of the season. Again it was an away day for the club as we made the journey to Newtownhamilton. In an entertaining game we came away with a share of the spoils in what was a tale of two halves. All looked good for the Seans as we came out of the blocks fast with a well taken goal by Gary Larkin in the first minute. With the elements at our backs in the first half we continued in this bright fashion with 3 well taken points from the impressive James Treanor and another from Gary Larkin on the stroke of half time. Despite having the greater of possession in the 1st half we went in with just a 3 point advantage on a score line of Sean’s 1-4 Newtownhamilton 0-4. The hosts took control of the second half immediately with a brace of early points. The Sean’s only managing 3 points in the second half, Damien Larkin (6), Nigel Lynch (10) and James Treanor (24), scoring a point each. The second half was littered with free’s and some dubious decisions by the man in the middle, which in fairness went against both teams. In a tense finish a draw would have to be considered as a fair result as both teams put in huge efforts throughout the game.

    Final Score- Sean’s 1-7 Newtownhamilton 0-10 Team- D McArdle, S Clerkin, S McElvaney, E Clerkin, E McElvaney, P Kieran, J McConnon, C Connolly, N McGuirk, M Kieran, S McKenna, N Lynch(0-1), D Larkin(0-1), G Larkin(1-1), J Treanor (0-4) Sub- D McMahon – S McKenna

Seans begin new season in impressive style
    Ulster Senior Football League
    Seans 1-09
    Dungannon 0-05

The Seans kicked off their Ulster League campaign with a resounding win away in a windy Dungannon on Sunday last. Up against a strong physical Dungannon out fit the Seans acquitted themselves very well. Playing with a strong wind at their back in the first half the visitors made use of the elements and took the lead early in the match which they would never lose. Three early points, J Treanor(2) + D Larkin, set the trend for a one sided first half i n which Dungannon only scored once, after 13 mins. The defining moment of the game arrived on 28 mins with a brilliantly taken goal by James Treanor. T his goal was a clear result of the open attacking football that the visiting side played throughout the first half. The half ended with a brace of well taken scores by Emlyn Clerkin and Patrick Kieran's. The interval saw a score line of Seans 1-7 Dungannon 0-1. The home side came out for the second half in a more driven manner. This showed the other side of good team performance with the defense holding the home side to just 2 scores in the second half in contrast to open free flowing football of the first half. The forwards showed also that it wasn't just a backs to the wall defensive effort by taking the opportunities when they arose to them, with points coming from Damien and Gary Larkin. This performance gives good encouragement for the year ahead.

    Team and scorers: D McArdle, S Coyle, S McElvaney, E Clerkin(0-1), E McElvaney, P Kieran(0-1), S McKenna, N McGuirk, C Connolly, A Larkin, C McElvaney, N Lynch, J Treanor(1-2), G Larkin(0-2), D Larkin(0-2),

    Membership draw is outstanding success
Big crowd turns up at complex for a memorable night
A big crowd turned up at the complex in Threemilehouse on Sunday night for the much anticipated monster draw. Benny Kierans and his devoted organising committee had exceeded even the most optimistic expectations with over 6,000 tickets sold. Thats an incredible achievement for a club this size and everyone that was involved in the draw must be congratulated. And speaking of it; heartiest congratulations to Emyvale GAC who scooped the big prize when they were the first ticket to be drawn out. They are now the proud owners of a four bedroom detached house valued at over €150,000. The night itself was very enjoyable with the earlier result creating even more cause for celebration. The seniors managaing to stay up by the skin of their teeth. For a full list of winners in the draw see the notes section. Congatulations to all. The club would like to thank everyone for their immense generosity and kindness.

Jubilation as last minute goal secures top flight for next season
    Credit Union Senior Football League
    Scotstown 1-10
    Seans 1-11

A goal in the dying minutes by Gary Mc Entee saw Sean Mc Dermotts deservedly take all two points against Scotstown and in the process secure Senior football for next season. As the news of Inniskeen's defeat filtered through there were scenes of jubilation with many players and supporters in near dis-belief with the events that had just happened. It looked like the team's hard work and battling attitude was going to pay off as the team led by two points with five minutes left. Then the unthinkable happened and out of nowhere Scotstown grabbed a goal that was placed low into Darren Mc Ardle's bottom left corner. It was a devastating blow that silenced the away supporters who were completely gobsmacked at Scotstown taking the lead for the first time. The players, to their credit, didn't put the heads down with a goal the only option if they were to have any chance of staying up. Paul Acheson intercepted the ball well from a Scotstown attack and made a good run up the field. He found Stephen Mc Elvaney who had replaced the injured Emlyn Clerkin earlier. Mc Elvaney fired a cracking shot at goal that was blocked by a Scotstown defender. Somewhat miraculously the ball got held up in the muddy goalmouth and a stampede of players followed it. Gary Mc Entee somehow got his foot to it and up went the green flag. It was an unbelievable finish to the season and one that will certainly be talked about in the Parish for a long time.

Damien Larkin got proceedings under way in Scotstown with a long-range free after five minutes. This was after Seans had hit three wides in the opening minutes with the wind in their favour. This game was of little importance to Scotstown who had already made themselves safe but they still fielded a very strong side that included the dangerous front man, Nicholas Corrigan. Corrigan got his own side of the mark after six minutes after some intelligent passing. Seans welcomed back the services of Niall Mc Guirk whose presence in mid-feild is always a boost to the side. The big man broke a Scotstown kick out and found fellow mid-fielder Gary Mc Entee. He played a quick ball into Paddy Kierans and Kierans set off using his strength to shrug off his marker. He was fouled and Derek Mc Mahon slotted the free over with his left boot. It was all Seans at this stage and another free by Damien and a super score from Gary Larkin put the visitors ahead by three. Scotstown replied with a well taken score and Corrigan was at it again putting over another well hit free. With the first half almost up Emmet Mc Elvaney found Gary Mc Entee in a bit of space and he belted over the last score of the first half. Seans going into the break with two points to spare.

Its safe to say that the second half is all a bit of a blur as every catch, kick, point, wide and break was testing the heart of many a Seans supporter. The live update that was available from Inniskeen wasn't exactly reliable. At one stage Inniskeen were winning by a goal. Minutes later they were down by two. Meanwhile Scotstown were mounting a comeback and points by Damien larkin (free) and another by Adrian Larkin were cancelled by points from Colm Mc Elwain and the ever-accurate Nicholas Corrigan. With just over ten minutes left Scotstown were off target with a couple of frees and it seemed to be all falling into place for Mc Dermotts. The live update told us that Inniskeen were down by four and Clontibret were looking good. It couldn't be this easy? No it couldn't. Gary Larkin had just found Damien with a brilliant pass and he was fouled again. Damien put it over and the score board read Scotstown 0-8 Seans 0-9. Gary larkin got another point soon after and it looked to be all but wrapped up with Clontibret increasing their lead against Inniskeen. But Scotstown had other ideas. The seans back line failed to clear a relatively simple ball and a hopeful shot went past everyone and into the bottom left-hand corner of Darren Mc Ardle's goal. Mc Ardle to his credit did get a touch but there was little he could do given the condition of the goal mouth area. It was a blow that most teams could not recover from but the Seans players kept their heads up with large number of Seans supporters urging them on from the stand. Scotstown seemed to put the final nail in the coffin with another point on the hour mark. The resulting injury time kick out was picked up by Scotstown who played a useful ball towards Corrigan. Acheson did well and he set off for one last effort with a goal the only option. Stephen Mc Elvaney was alert to him receiving the pass deep inside Scotstown's half. Mc Elvaney showed some good pace and his well struck effort was just cleared but only as far as Gary Larkin. The ball bounced off him and into the muddy goal mouth. The rest as they say is history and it was the Seans players who were now jumping for joy as the final whistle blew in Scotstown. We look forward to another exciting season in Senior football next year. The big draw for the house is tonight in the complex so make sure to come along to what should be a very enjoyable occasion.

    Truagh punish lack lustre Seans
    Credit Union Senior Football League
    Seans 3-05
    Truagh 3-14

It was a game that Seans needed to win. Last week a spirited performance against Magheracloone raised eyebrows and installed some much needed belief into the side. After taking four points of the fancied Mitchells outfit already this year all eyes were on Truagh to be the game that would see Seans reach the magical fourteen points total in the League. Easier said than done. Sean Mc Dermotts not only struggled to come to terms with Truagh's pacey forwards but made error after error frustrating themselves and indeed the large crowd that was present at blustery Pairc Sean Mhic Diarmada.

Traugh got off to a bright start with lose marking allowing Mark Counihan in for his first of the game. After the kick out a crowded mid-field used the breaking ball well. Gary Mc Entee played a short ball into Damien Larkin who was being fouled. He managed to shrug of his marker and slotted over the home side's first of the game. Mark Treanor then sent out another warning sign with a well-taken point from a tight angle. Two minutes later and the Seans defence were raging when a goal was allowed after the umpire failed to see a blatent square ball. Christopher Connolly was moved from mid-field to the halfback line due to the return of Derek Mc Mahon. Connolly used his head well to find Paddy Kierans free and he eased the nerves with a point. Shortly after and Mc Dermotts were celebrating the equaliser. A long ball was sent to a packed sqaure and it somehow managed to find the back of the net in what looked to be an own goal. Truagh were playing up the field with a very strong wind and they used this advantage well. Mark Counihan got his sides third point and Pauric Treanor got another soon after. The Sean's back line appeared to be finding it difficult to cope with the Truagh attack and Treanor added another from a free three minutes later. More loose marking let Colm Mc Rory in for his first. Another attack from the resulting kick out and Truagh were awarded a 45. A relatively simple high ball in ended in disaster for Mc Dermotts when the ball some how managed to find the back of the net. It came at a bad time just approaching half time and they rubbed salt into the wounds with another well taken point. The Seans then responded with some intelligent forward play of their own which resulted in Damien Larkin being fouled again. He converted the resulting free. The home side looked to be on the up and were beginning to win the essential breaks in the middle. James Treanor collected one of the breaks and used his pace and stength to score an impressive goal, the fourth of the match coming just on the stroke of half time.

Referee Nicky Calvert threw the ball in for the second half and Derek Mc Mahon collected well. He played a useful ball into Damien Larkin who turned well but as we have seen so often this season he was fouled with a dangerous foot tackle. He buried the penalty sending the keeper the wrong way. The penalty should have lifted mc Dermotts but instead they entered into a very barren period. Mid-field is an area that can win or lose a game for any team and Seans were beginning to lose it completely. Break after break was collected by Truagh and points from Colm Mc Rory and another by Noel Clerkin left Seans trailing by four points. Paddy Kierans got involved in a bit of a scuffle with another Truagh player and received a yellow card. Incredibly the experienced forward was heading to the sideline a minute later for a second yellow. Martin Kierans linked up well with Chris Connolly who found James Treanor. Treanor kicked over his second score. But most of the action was at the other end of the field. The speedy Colm Mc Rory had proved a handful for Seans and he netted a brilliant goal after a long run. The goal killed off any fight the home side had left and points by Mc Rory and Clerkin finished of the scoring for Truagh. Gary larking finished of the Seans scoring with a fisted point with Nicky Calvert blowing the final whistle. With three game left against Blayney, Scotstown and Clontibret Mc Dermotts need points if they are to avoid returning to Intermediate ranks next season.

Inniskeen in form against struggling Seans
    Credit Union Senior Football League
    Inniskeen 1-13
    Seans 1-07

It seems like a long time since Seans produced a brilliant performance to beat Scotstown in what was an exciting and highly entertaining game. Since then its been a difficult period for Sean Mc Dermotts losing three league games in a row and todays defeat to Inniskeen highlights the serious situation they are now very much in. With only ten points accumulated the team is in desperate need of points but a more determined Inniskeen came away with the victory in a dire game played in desperate conditions. Inniskeen are the in-form team at the minute, knocking Clontibret out of the championship and moving up the table at a steady pace. Sean Mc Dermotts are out of form somewhat and they never really got into the game apart from a brief flurry at the end. Seans welcomed back the services of Gary Mc Entee and Gary Larkin whose experience was sorely missed against Castleblayney but was relatively quiet and struggled to play to his ability in difficult conditions.

Inniskeen got off to a good start going three points up after seven minutes. James Treanor and Damien larkin got the visitors of the mark with two frees. The slippery conditions at Grattan park were having an effect on the game already but Inniskeen were winning the breaks in the middle. They went six three up with Seans seemingly not getting any luck before Damien Larkin was fouled on the fourty five metre line. He found Paddy Kiernas free and he slooted the ball over. Inniskeen then played a long ball in to their full-forward who held off Emlyn Clerkin and placed the ball into the back of the net leaving Jeremy Treanor with no chance. That goal coming just at the end of the first half and it was to prove vital.

The second half started dismaly for Seans, Inniskeen hitting three points without reply. They would have had another goal if it wasn't for a brilliant save by goalkeeper Jeremy Treanor who blocked Fergal Duffy's shot. They hit three more points without reply before Gary Mc Entee got his sides first point in the second half. Damien Larkin's free in the 45th minute was immediately cancelled out by Inniskeen who were looking very sharp up front. There was brief cause for celebration for the visiting faithful when Damien Larkin scored a good goal in the last few minutes. Time was not on their side however and Ronan Meegan scored another free to leave the final score Seans 1-07 Inniskeen 1-13. Seans next outing is a home game against Magheracloone.

Defeat for Seniors but League survival now the priority
ACC Bank senior football championship qualifying rd. 2
    Seans 1-07
    Castleblayney 2-11

With underdogs causing all sorts of upsets in the Bank of Ireland championship Castleyblayney wanted to avoid the dreaded prospect of being eliminated by Sean Mc Dermotts and they did just that. It wasn't the most entertaining game of the championship but Blayney won't mind that one bit. They produced some of the form that seen them lift the prestigious Mick Duffy cup last year but it was rare and its difficult to see them get past the like of latton or Magheracloone. Sean Mc Dermotts on the other hand really had nothing to lose with an understrength side more worried about Senior survival. They had spells of great football, Christopher Connolly putting in an outstanding performance in mid-field as well as good individual performaces from Emmet Mc Elvaney who did a great marking job on County man Ciaran Tavey and James Coyle who was consistent as ever keeping Dermot Mc Ardle at bay.

Kieran Tavey celebrated his return to the Castleblayney colours with the crucial goal that helped Castleblayney to victory over Sean McDermott's in Tyholland on Saturday 14th August. Tavey had been out through injury for some considerable time but his goal in the 20th minute of the second half effectively sealed victory for the reigning champions.

Earlier things had been much more even with Castleblayney dominating the opening quarter but then having to soak up a period of Sean McDermott pressure as they rallied in the final 10 minutes of the first-half. Castleblayney led at half-time by 0-6 to 0-3, Kieran Tavey contributing five of those points. The first-half also saw the introduction of Patrick Conlon, C’Blayney, for the injured Colm Donnelly just hours after he had won an All Ireland minor C. Hurling championship medal with Monaghan in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Castleblayney got off to a great start to the second half and by the ninth minute they had extended their lead to 8 points thanks largely to a goal by Dermot McArdle after some seven minutes.

Sean McDermotts rallied briefly and were thrown a lifeline when a high centre by Paddy Kieran was mishandled in the Castleblayney area for what was effectively an own goal. Two points in quick succession reduced the deficit to 3 as the game entered the final quarter. Any chance however that Sean McDermotts had of turning it around was killed off when Kieran Tavey struck for Castleblayney’s second goal in the 20th minute to effectively wrap up victory. C’Blayney now play Latton in the quarter final.

    Carrick take advantage
    Credit Union Senior Football League
    Seans 1-08
    Carrick 3-11

Conditions at Threemilehouse were far from perfect and either was the performance from the home side who showed none of the hunger that had been the basis of their great victory over Aghabog a week ago. Sean Mc Dermotts injury woes were evident even more with Nigel Lynch, Conor Mc Elvaney, Stephen Mc Elvaney, Paddy Kierans, Niall Mc Guirk to name just a few players all ruled out. Summer holidays also put a dent in the Seans personnell and this defeat to Carrick now puts Seans in serious trouble, looming around the drop zone in the League. The situation there is that Seans are now one point off the bottom two. Inniskeen had a crucial victory over Aghabog and that leaves them rooted to the bottom with seven points. Inniskeen and Carrick have nine points and Scotstown and Seans just ahead on ten points. The players know that a vast improvement is required if they want to get past champions Castleblayney in the next round of the championship to be played this weekend.

Gary Mc Entee played an important role in the victory against Aghabog and he was to have an effect in this game too. Unfortunately for the mid-fielder it was a negative effect when he received his marching orders from referee Gerry Mc Carron for striking just before half-time. It was a blow to the already weakened side and while Carrick could be criticised for not making better use of the spare man they ran out comfortable winners in the end. Eoin Duffy got things going for the visitors after three minutes and Andy Callen followed up with a free. Carrick then went four points up with Mc Dermotts looking quite nervous at the back. Indeed they were lucky to be only four down, Callen hitting his third wide after only fifteen minutes of play. Seans then showed some initiative but James Treanor went for goal and was off target after losing his man. Martin Kieran was fouled shortly after and Damien Larkin predictably slotted over his first. He was in the thick of the action again minutes later when he dis-possessed the keeper and put the ball over to leave just two between the sides. Carrick however were looking dangerous up front but they were off target again, Callen the guilty party once more. Mid-field was a problem for Mc Dermotts with Carrick winning a lot of breaks and then supplying good ball to their forwards. They were rewarded a penalty after Emlyn Clerkin was judged to have fouled but Gary Mc Eneaney shot wide. The corner back had to hurry back to his position but the counter attack was ruined with sloppy play and Gordon Finnegan was gifted his first of the game. Sean Mc Dermotts were riding their luck somewhat but Adrian Larkin scored a brilliant point to leave two between the sides again. Then Carrick got the goal they had been threatening. Stephen Gollogly finishing off what was the best move of the half. Gary Larkin showed some terrific pace seconds later and left himself with only the keeper to beat. He did that but unfortunately for him the woodwork stayed put and a great chance had went a begging. An off the ball incident just before the half time whistle saw Gary Mc Entee receive a straight red, a decision that didn't receive any great protests from Mc Entee and suddenly an already understrength side had the second half to look forward to with only fourteen men.
    Half-Time score:
    Seans 0-3
    Carrick 1-5

James Treanor (free) and Damien Larkin got their side of to a good start in the second half. Finnegan got his second moments later and Stephen Gollogly put over a free to leave five points between the sides after ten minutes. Gary Larkin responded with a fine point but his hard work was cancelled out by Andy Callen who was begining to find his shooting feet again. Gordon Finnegan then scored another goal using his strength to shrug off his man and Callen increased the margin with a free shortly after. It was all going horribly wrong for McDermotts the defecit heading into double scores. The Carrick goalkeeper then gave Mc Dermotts some hope after he blatently charged into Gary Larkin and the penalty was converted by Damien Larkin. Michael Mc Guinness left six between the sides with a well struck point. With five minutes remaining all was certainly not lost for Mc Dermotts as Damien Larkin yet again got his name on the score sheet with a point. But it was Carrick who had the experience and the hunger and with time running out they took control hitting a goal and a point in a three minute blitz that ended any hopes of a comeback.

First half storm blows Aghabog away
ACC Bank Senior Football Championship - Qualifying Rd 1
    Seans 2-09
    Aghabog 0-12

Sean Mc Dermotts came away from Scotstown happy with their performance and satisfied that the better team on the day will move on and face last year's champions Castleblayney in the next round. Aghabog's championship aspirations are over for another year and many of their faithful who made the short trip to Scotstown will feel that they have only themselves to blame. Sean Mc Dermott's magnificant first half performance left Aghabog shell-shocked but brighter football in the second half gave them hope. For them it was their own kicking in front of goal that finally put the nail in Aghabog's proverbial coffin and they now have to concentrate on maintaining Senior status for the coming season. Mc Dermotts, like most of this year's campaign, were forced to field a team short a number of regulars due to injury but a few star performances from the likes of Darren Mc Ardle in goal, Damien and Gary Larkin up front and Gary Mc Entee in the middle gave Seans an edge that Aghabog simply couldn't match.

McArdle denied Aghabog on a number of occasions, one form a penalty while Damien Larkin rattled up the impressive tally of two goals and four points. Adrian Larkin started the scoring with a point and a second came from Damien Larkin after a foul on Nigel Lynch.

Another free and Damien Larkin scored a point with Aghabog then registering two wides from Gary McBride before Declan Smyth got their first point. Sean McDermotts registered their first wide but they followed this up with a point from Damien Larkin for a three points lead. Aghabog were off target again while Sean McDermotts struck back with a goal from Damien Larkin after a good ball in from Adrian Larkin created the opening.

Aghabog had another wide and then Darren McArdle brought off an excellent save in the Sean McDermotts goal to deny Declan Smyth after he received a good ball in from Barry McCarville. Gary McBride got Aghabog's second point from a free after a foul on Declan Cusack with Sean McDermotts again off target before they were awarded a penalty as Shane Mulligan brought down Nigel Lynch.

Damien Larkin scored the resultant spot kick to put his side four points up at that stage. Gary McBride was off target for Aghabog from a free but Declan Smyth made amends with the next point for Aghabog and as they put on the pressure Darren McArdle again brought off another great save to deny Francis Dolan. The rebound fell to Declan Cusack and again McArdle brought off a very good save. Aghabog still applied pressure and when Gary McBride was brought down in the small square for a penalty it gave them a great chance to close the gap and get a big morale boost as well. Gary took the penalty kick himself but again an excellent save by Darren McArdle denied Aghabog the goal they needed and had been looking for.

The rebound fell to Aidan Brady who was fouled but ill luck still dogged them as Declan Smyth's free kick hit the upright and came back into play. Sean McDermotts lifted the siege and Patrick Kieran was fouled at the other end but Damien Larkin failed to convert the resultant free kick. Gary Larkin got Sean McDermotts next point from play which was to be the last score of the first half to leave eight points between them at the break, Sean McDermotts 2-5 Aghabog: 0-3.

Sean McDermotts brought in Martin Kieran to replace Patrick Kieran at the start of the second half and Aghabog's wastefulness continued with another wide and it was Sean McDermotts who recorded the first score of the second half with a point from Chris Connolly after good forward play from Damien Larkin and Adrian Larkin who put Chris Connolly through for the score.

Gary Larkin added another point before Francis Dolan registered Aghabog's first score and when Declan Smyth got their second score of the half things began to look brighter. Gary McEntee got added a point for Sean McDermotts to keep the margin at nine points and Aghabog's cause wasn't helped with another wide.

Sean O'Brien steadied things with a good point from play and in thjeir best operiod in the second half Declan Smyth fired over three points in quick succession to bring the deficit down to six. Gary McBride then converted a free after a foul on Sean O'Brien to leave the margin at five points. Brendan O'Brien came on for Aghabog to replace Declan Cusack and Sean McDermotts relieved the pressure with a Damien Larkin point from a free.

Shane Mulligan got on the score sheet for Aghabog and Declan Smyth brought his tally to seven points but time was now the enemy and Sean McDermotts could afford the luxury of two wides in a row but they finish as they had started, on the offensive, and Derek McCarville made an excellent save to deny Gary Larkin what looked a certain goal.

Second defeat on the trot for Seans
    Credit Union Senior Football League
    Aghabog 2-08
    Seans 0-10

After an unlucky defeat to Latton earlier in the week Sean Mc Dermotts were looking to take another very valuable two points from Aghabog but things worked out very differently with Aghabog just about deserving their win. Played in good conditions at Aghabog both teams played some great football and the championship clash coming up between these sides looks wide open. Seans inflicted a heavy defeat on Aghabog earlier in the season at Threemilehouse but they found it hard to reproduce that form.
Sean's fielded another team short a number of regulars, something which they have had to live with for most of the season and yet again they were left cursing missed chances. Aghabog got off to a promising start and were two points up after seven minutes. Damien Larkin then pounced on a loose ball and hit his first point after ten minutes. Paul Durnan equalised shortly after just before Aghabog were awarded a jubious penalty which Gary Mc Bride converted. James Treanor was getting a lot of possession in the first half and he converted his first score after twenty minutes. Shane Mulligan replied with another point for the home side after the Seans gave a loose ball in mid-field. More sloppy play around the middle resulted in Mulligan getting his second and Aghabog increased their lead to five points with the first half almost up. Damien Larkin then showed remarkable awareness winning possession in mid-field and slotting over his second.
    Half-Time:
    Aghabog 1-06
    Seans 0-04
Against latton some observers felt missed frees were a big factor to their defeat and the second half began with more of the same only for Aghabog to put the ball over the bar to put the margin to five again. Damien didn't miss the next free and the visitors seemed to be finding themselves a little, Nigel Lynch getting a bizzare point after it bounced over the cross-bar. Aghabog found it difficult to break down the Seans attack and this resulted in a number of frees been given away, Damien Larkin punishing them again to leave only a goal between the sides after twenty minutes of the second half. Nigel Lynch definitely had his kicking boots on when he scored from the sideline. In a hectic period of the game Seans got another and Emmet Mc Elvaney roused the visiting faithful with a great point. The Seans were on the up but just like the Latton game the opposition benefited and the ball was in Darren Mc Ardle's net for the second time. Aghabog finished it off with another point. It makes for a great championship clash between these two sides with Aghabog taking the favourites tag after today.

    D. Larkin 0-5; N. Lynch 0-2; P. Durnan 0-1; J Treanor 0-1; E. Mc Elvaney 0-1.

Gary Larkin cracker not enough for Seans
    Credit Union Senior Football League
    Seans 3-03
    Latton 1-13

Sean Mc Dermotts fielded a somewhat depleted side for this Credit Union Senior Football League game at Thremilehouse but came out unlucky losers in a highly entertaining clash. They battled hard against high-flying Latton and its fair to say were unlucky not to have come away with at least a draw. Latton struggled to break down a rugged Seans' backline and only for an opportunist goal in the dying minutes things could have been a lot different. Unfortunately for the North-Monaghan side a couple of missed chances in the second half, notably frees, proved to be the turning point and Latton used their experience to pull away in the end.
Laton have been one of the more consistent teams of this year's campaign and they started brightly, Eoin Lennon putting the visitors 2 points up after 8 minutes. Damien Larkin then opened Seans' account with a great goal, something which he had been threatening with the Latton defence looking a little lathargic. With the Seans side almost unrecognisable due to the sheer amount of absentees Latton found themselves a bit of space in mid-field. County star Eoin Lennon was giving management cause for concern after he fielded a number of kick-outs. It paid off for them and they were back in front after two points without reply, one a free. Sean Mc Dermotts were struggling to get the ball up the field but they could afford to be patient as Damien Larkin hit the back of the net again. His second goal coming after showing some brilliant individual skill. Nigel Lynch followed this up with a free and the Seans were finding a new resurgence. Another free at the onther end of the pitch gave Latton a vital score going into the break.
    Half-Time score:
    Seans 2-01
    Latton 0-05

After their performance in the first half Seans came out of the dressing rooms as slight favourites to seal the two points. It was Latton who took the first score of the second half after good link up play among their forwards. James Treanor responded with an excellent point from a tight angle and once again Seans had the upper hand. Unfortunately the newly found confidence sent alarm bells ringing for Latton and good movement by the Latton forwards and fouling by the Seans' backs saw the visitors hit five without reply, two from frees. The big turning point seem to come during this period when a couple of straight-forward free kicks were missed and it was Latton who looked to be high and dry. Damien Larkin got another point to add to his tally and then it was gary's turn who after showing some blistering pace buried the ball low and hard into the net in what must be a contender for goal of the season. The sides were level again but the jubilation was only temporary for the home faithful as Latton showed their experience hitting a goal and a point in what was a frantic end to a great contest. Seans play local rivals Aghabog in the league this Sunday.

Down hold on, Monaghan go out
    Ulster U-21 Football Championship
    Down 2-7
    Monaghan 0-11

Two first-half goals helped Down lay the foundations for victory in this competitive and at times exciting Ulster under 21 championship game that was played in difficult, wintry conditions in Clones on Saturday 13th March.
Those two first-half strikes helped Down establish a strong foothold in the game. Monaghan fared much better in the second half to outscore the Down men by seven points to two but ultimately they failed to make the breakthrough for the goal they desperately needed to turn the game around completely.
Down had the added handicap that they had to play the final quarter with 14 players when corner forward Eoin McCarten was sent off for a high challenge on Niall Flanagan.
Down struck for the first goal as early as the second minute when McCarten raced through to give Paul McElroy no chance. Monaghan opened their account in the 10th minute with a point from a free by Damien Larkin and they reduced the deficit to the minimum when Paul Finlay converted a free in the 11th minute. Down re-established their superiority with a point from Barry Doran in the 14th minute and a second goal from Conor Laverty after excellent work by Kalum King and Martin Rafferty. Five minutes from the end of the first half Down were ahead on double scorers, eight to four but they finished the half with a flourish for three unanswered points in the final minutes to go in seven in front at the break, Down 2-5 Monaghan 0-4.
Within two minutes of the restart Monaghan had reduced the deficit to five points with two early scorers from Stephen Gollogly and that set the scene for a an increasingly effective performance by Monaghan in the second half. Weather conditions deteriorated during the second period with heavy rain making handling and footwork increasingly difficult. An exchange of points between Aidan Carr and Paul Finlay left five points between the sides at the end of the third quarter with Down then suffering a major blow when corner forward Eoin McCartan was red carded for a high challenge on Niall Flanagan.
Another exchange of points between Paul Finlay and Barry Doran left five between the sides again entering the final 10 minutes and while Down were not to score again Monaghan could only manage three points from Damian Larkin, free in the 22nd minute, Paul Finlay, also a free a minute into stoppage time and Shane Mulligan almost three minutes into injury time to leave two between the sides at the final whistle. Down now meet Fermanagh in the next round.

'Towering performance' from James Coyle not enough for Monaghan
    National League first round
    Carlow 0-13
    Monaghan 0-11

Despite a vastly improved second-half performance Monaghan failed to close the gap completely on Carlow in this very competitive if never spectacular game in Dr. Cullen Park on Sunday last.
Carlow laid the foundations for victory in the first half as they exploited the weaknesses in Monaghan's game to good effect, particularly their concession of free kicks close to goal that saw Brian Kelly register eight of his ten points from frees, a scoring feat that created a gap between the teams that Monaghan just failed to bridge despite a battling second half display. On the day Monaghan gave four players their national league debut, Francie Doogan, Francis Markey, Dessie Mone and Damian Larkin all getting their first national league start but symptomatic of Monaghan's problems on the day was that all four were substituted during the game.

Essentially this was a game of two proverbial halves, with Carlow dominating the opening period to lead by four points at half-time and that margin not at all flattering their superiority while in the second half Monaghan dug deep and with a little more luck in front of goals might well have snatched it at the death.
Brian Kelly was the star of the show for the winners, he hit ten points in all, eight from frees with an exhibition of place kicking from a range of distances and angles. The game also marked a milestone for veteran dual player, Johnny Nevin, who played his 300th senior competitive match for Carlow in football and hurling.

Carlow dominated the midfield exchanges and exploited the broken play in the difficult wintry conditions that much better and but for a towering performance from James Coyle at full-back Monaghan might have been in greater trouble.

The sides were level at two points apiece after ten minutes but Carlow then opened a three points gap with three free kick conversions from Brian Kelly and he hit all but two of their first half scores.
Paul Finlay kept Monaghan in touch with three points in the opening 20 minutes, all from frees, his third reducing the deficit to two points.

Carlow again upped their performance to hit four on the trot between the 23rd of 32nd minutes to go six points in front, Brian Kelly with two and Johnny Kavanagh and Sean Kavanagh with one each. Monaghan rallied in the closing stages to pull back two valuable points from Damien and Tom Freeman to leave the half-time score Carlow 0-9, Monaghan 0-5.

Monaghan got off to a great start to the second-half with a point by Michael Slowey after just 15 seconds and they should have reduced the deficit further but for some near misses in the opening five minutes. Carlow weathered the storm and struck back for three points in quick succession, all from frees by Brian Kelly to go six points in front for the second time. From there to the finish however it was increasingly Monaghan and four unanswered points between the 14th and 25th minutes saw them reduce the deficit to two and leave the issue still wide open.

Monaghan were unlucky not to take the lead in the 27th minute when a brilliant move involving Vincent Corey, Tom Freeman, Paul Finlay and Jason Hughes saw Tom Freeman with a shot on goals only to see his effort denied with a brilliant diving save from Carlow goalkeeper John Brennan.

A goal at that stage would have changed the outcome of the game but Carlow, grateful for the let-off, rallied for a point from substitute Simon Rea with Monaghan only able to pull back a late consolation score from Paul Finlay.
