Sean McDermotts Jubilee Rose Sat 20th November 2010

Sean Mc Dermott’s have begun their search to find the lucky girl who will be crowned their “Jubilee Rose” and become club ambassador at the various celebrations planned to mark the 50th anniversary of the football clubs formation next year, 2011. Fifteen young ladies (pictured here) have been nominated for this honour, and these lovely local lassies from Tappa to Aughnacloy have all entered

The fifteen Roses pictured at the launch

the spirit of this pageant and are looking forward to the novel selection banquet. The club’s magnificent sports hall will be bedecked in club colours to host this gala evening which takes place on Saturday 20th November. Young footballing stars from across the county and indeed the province are being enlisted to escorts the girls on the night. A prestigious judging panel has also been assembled whose task it will be to pick just one girl from this wonderful line up. No doubt family and friends will turn out in force to lend the girls their support, and with a scrumptious buffet, as well as dancing into the wee small hours also included in the evenings entertainment, the club are confident the wider community will avail of the opportunity to encourage all the budding Roses and enjoy what promises to be a memorable night.

Seans are JFL Champs
JFL Final Seans 1 - 12 Cremartin 0 - 14 (24th Oct 2010)

By virtue of their one point win on Sunday last in Ballybay in the final of Junior Football League our adult squad won the Dr. Ward Cup and gained promotion to Intermediate ranks for 2011. Play in ideal conditions this was an exciting encounter between too evenly matched teams; both sets of supporters kept on tender hooks throughout, the outcome in doubt right up to the final whistle. Our boys were first on the offensive James Treanor landing a fisted point in the opening minute.

Emmet McElvaney (Capt) and Damien Larkin (Vice Captain) proudly display the Dr Ward Cup

Eleven minute in the Cremartin defence were marked absent and the first real goal chance appeared a Damien Larkin pass found Daire Freeman on the edge of the small square but Freeman's quickly taken shot was just inches wide of the upright. Half way through the half our boys were just shading the battle for supremacy, Patrick Kieran found James Treanor with an exquisite pass and the left footed Treanor on the run split the posts from thirty yards. Darren Bishop opened Cremartin's account in the 18th minute with a expertly taken free and the same player had the teams all square a minute later the result of over zealous tackling in the Seans defence. A Barry Caragher free from the middle of the field in the 21st minute was well fielded in the Seans goal by Paraic Mc Guirk, the ball was quickly transfer to Sean Mc Crudden out on the wing on the opposite 45 a solo from Mc Crudden and the umpire was reaching for the white flag. Seans were still holding sway at this stage and when team captain Emmett Mc Elvaney was fouled, goalkeeper Mark Keogh stepped up to convert the fifty five metre free with plenty to spare. Barry Carragher eluded his marker in the 25th minute and found himself in space the big midfielder needed no second bidding confidently knocking over a long-range point to cut the deficit to a single point. In the 28th minute Daire Freeman restore Seans two point cushion, the Cremartin defence appeared to have everything under control but the ball somehow ended up with Freeman and the agile corner forward wasted no time in steering it between the posts. At the other end a minute later another corner forward Cremartin's Kevin Brennan with pace and agility beat the Sean's defence to hit one of the best scores of the game. In the first minute of added on time free taker Darren Bishop had the side level for the second time with a well taken point from play under extreme pressure. On the stroke of half time with three minutes of injury time played Damien Larkin in the Cremartin goalmouth out jumped defenders to fist over the final score of the half and give his side the slenderest of leads as the teams headed to the dressing rooms. Half time Seans 0 -6 Cremartin 0- 5.
From the throw in Patrick Kieran doubled the Seans lead with a nice point from play, a couple of minutes later Damien Larkin converted a forty metre free following a heavy challenge on midfielder Kieran. Kevin Brennan again showed his nimbleness and speed nipping in to reduce the lead in the 7th minute after the Seans rear guard had failed to clear. If Seans had the better of the opening half the pendulum now swung in Cremartin favour; points from Declan Mulligan in the 9th minute and a fourth minor from the trusty boot of Darren Bishop restored parity. When Cremartin corner back Ronan Burke put his side in front for the first time in the match at the half way stage of the half many Sean's supporters could have been forgiven for believing the game was slowly slipping away from their team. A Damien Larkin free in the 16th minute rallied the troops, but when Declan Mulligan hit two glorious point in quick succession in the 18th and 19th minute everyone in the Mc Dermott camp knew they would have to dig deep to pull this one out of the fire. David Mc Entee lit the spark a fine point with his marker in close proximity; the ever reliable Larkin rowed in with the equalising score from play in the 27th minute. A minute later there was euphoria among the Seans supporters as they watch a low goal ward effort from Patrick Kieran beat a defender to end up in the corner of the Cremartin net past unsighted goalkeeper Damien Lavelle.
Cremartin were not about to throw in the towel and as the fourth official showed three additional minutes, free taker Bishop had already cut into that lead converting a close in free. Possession was vital and Cremartin got it another Bishop conversion and the lead was down to a single point by the end of the first minute of injury time. Three minute in Damien Larkin showed his experience carrying twenty yards in from the stand sideline before fisting over for what surely must be the insurance point, everyone looked to the referee for some sign that time was up. None come, and in the 35th minute when Gary Boyd found himself ten metres out from the Seans goal, hearts and heads soared and deflated in both camps as his potential last ditch winner was deflected over the bar to leave the final score Cremartin 0 -14 Seans 1 -12.
The team/panel on duty were Mark Keogh (0-1F), Philip Farrell, Paraic Mc Guirk, Damien Connolly, Nigel Lynch, Emmett Mc Elvaney (Capt), Martin Kieran, Pat Kieran (1-1), Derek Mc Mahon, David Mc Entee (0- 1), Noel Rice, Sean Mc Crudden (0- 1), Daire Freeman (0-1) Damien Larkin (0- 5(2F), James Treanor (0 -2). Subs used Patrick Kieran and Shane Larkin. Panel: Murt Cleere, Eamonn Mc Quillan, Shane O' Neill, Donal Mc Guigan, Christopher Hughes, Stephen Clerkin, Danny Mc Nally, Darren Keely, Eunan Mc Entee, Nigel Mc Quillan, Fergal Mc Quillan, James Murphy, Mark Mc Guigan, Emlyn Clerkin.
Team captain Emmett Mc Elvaney in his after match speech paid tribute to the panel for their commitment and dedication, he thanked manager Gary Larkin, trainer Noel Melvin and selector Colm Mc Mahon for the time and effort and the meticulous preparation that they brought to every training session and was a major part in this success. He thanks the club and supporters who were out in strength today, he had a special word of appreciation for team sponsors Mc Elvaney Waste & Recycling, and he concluded by calling for three cheers for a very gallant Cremartin team.

Seans into JFL Final After Impressive Victory over Clones
JFL Semi final Seans 1 – 15 Clones 1 -6 (Sun 3rd Oct 2010)

Our adult squad on Sunday last booked their place in the 2010 Dr Ward Cup final when they overcame Clones on a scoreline of 1 -15 to 1 -9. Right from the opening minute when a delicate pass from Martin Kieran unhinged the visitor's defence to allow Damien Larkin rifle to the net from close range, the outcome of this game was never really in doubt. Seans settled in quickly after this tonic and hurried and hassled Clones in all area of the field in that opening half, restricting their usually dangerous forward line to just 3 points, while they tagged on an 9 points of their own. Mark Keogh 0-1(F) David Mc Entee 0-2 James Treanor 0- 2 Sean Mc Crudden 0 - 1 Damien Larkin 1-3(1 F). Leaving the half time score Seans 1-9 Clones 0-3.
Clones did mounted a spirited revival in the second half and showed glimpsed of the football they are capable off, subtle inter changes knifing through the Sean defence; but luck wasn’t on their side as their supporters watch in agony three guilt edge goal chances shave the outside of the upright. Adrian Althroph was on the end of one of those defence splitting moves to raise a green flag, but 3 point from Larkin and the opening score of the half from Daire Freeman kept the half time margin in tact. A brilliant point blank save by the Clones net minder in the 12th minute from James Treanor gave Clones renewed hope of still pulling back that deficit, but with Pardaig Mc Guirk holding his own in the aerial duels with full forward Declan Mc Kernan and Philip Farrell Noel Rice Martin Kieran and team captain Emmett Mc Elvaney all in fine form there was no way on this occasion our boys were going to surrender that lead. They await the outcome of the other semi final between Cremartin and Corduff, down for decision on Saturday next in Cremartin at 4.00pm, the final at a venue yet to be confirmed is set for Sunday 24th October.
For the record the team on duty last Sunday was Mark Keogh, Philip Farrell, Padraig Mc Guirk, Damien Connolly, Nigel Lynch, Emmett Mc Elvaney, Martin Kieran, Derek Mc Mahon, Noel Rice, Sean Mc Crudden, Patrick Kieran, David Mc Entee, James Treanor, Damien Larkin, Daire Freeman, Subs used Patrick Kieran, Shane O Neill, and Eamonn Mc Quillan

Last Chance Saloon in League Semi-final
Seans play Clones on Sunday 2nd Oct in JFL Semi-final

Our adult squad have worked hard all year and have finished in pole position at the top of the Junior Football league table, but that effort could be all for nought if they fail to overcome next Sunday's opponent in the first of the knock out semi-finals at TMH at 12.30pm, Clones are their formidable opponents barring the way to a promotion shot. At this stage of the same competition last year our boys cause somewhat of a surprise when they had a couple of points to spare over the 2009 table toppers. Gary Larkin and Co. will be anxious that a similar fate doesn't befall his charges this year. Clones no doubt will be out to avenge last year's slip up and keep their own promotion ambitions on track. Our boys will be hoping that home advantage will give them the edge they need to book that coveted final place, but all involved know well that alone will not be enough and they will have to play to their very best if they hope to progress. Hopefully we will see a big turn out of home support on Sunday to give the boys the support their commitment merits and deserves. Throw in time remember is 12.30pm

Seans Exit Championship
JFC Killeevan 2-10 Seans 0-14 (Sun 15th Aug 2010)

The vociferous protestations of Seans defenders last Sunday evening were to no avail in St Tiernach's Park Clones as our adult squad bowed out of the 2010 Junior Football championship in the cruellest of fashion; a last minute goal compounded with what most Seans supporters regarded as questionable refereeing decisions that allowed the score to stand saw neighbours Killeevan snatch the dramatic winner and progression to the semi-final on a score line of Killeevan 2-10 Seans 0- 14. Despite claims of a square ball and a foul on the goalkeeper the injury time winner was deemed legitimate much to dismay and disbelief of our players and supporters.
Although struggling in many areas of the field against a physically stronger Killeevan fifteen our boys better cohesion and a virtuoso performance in point taking from play and frees by Damien Larkin had kept them deservedly in front until those dramatic and heart breaking closing seconds.

Championship Defeat to Cremartin
JFC Cremartin 0-09 Seans 0-08 (Sun 4th July 2010)

Our adult squad will want to forget an abysmal second half performance in their Junior football championship quarter final clash with Cremartin last Sunday, a meagre one point return in those thirty minutes was not enough to prevent them ending up on the wrong side of a 0 - 9 to 0 -8 score line. Having led at the break by three points they looked well placed with a cross-field breeze also in their favour to forge ahead. That expect push never materialised instead it was the opposition and their dominant midfield who virtually laid siege to the Seans goal in that second half as they set about overhauling the interval deficit, and but for some wayward finishing the margin of victory could have been greater. Only defenders Noel Rice, Philip Farrell and full forward Damien Larkin showing glimpses of their true ability. No doubt manager Gary Larkin and his selectors were as bemused and disappointed by this uncharacteristic collapse as the big contingent of travelling supporters, but with some time before the next outing in this competition one can be assured he will be investing time and energy to insure this outfit still has a say on the destiny of the 2010 Junior championship. The have little time to lick their wounded pride as the play Blackhill on Wednesday night in the Junior football league at TMH at 8.00pm, this game was originally scheduled for Friday evening but was brought forward at Blackhill's request.

Up and Running in the Championship
JFC Seans 1-12 Toome 0-09 (Sun 13th June 2010)

A blistering opening ten minutes which yielded 5 unanswered points was the foundation which saw our first team progress to the second round of the Junior Football championship at the expense of Toome in Ballybay on Sunday last. Toome eventually found their rhythm and battled back to reduced the deficit to a single point; but as the game entered the closing stages a well taken goal by James Treanor all but deflated the Toome comeback and gave our boys the boast needed as they went on to tag on further points to leave the fulltime score Seans 1- 12 Toome 0 -9.
In a good all round team performance the young contingent of Mark Mc Guigan, Paraic Mc Guirk, Noel Rice, Philip Farrell, David Mc Entee, and goal scorer Treanor deserve special mention; Damien Larkin and veteran Paddy Kieran (Sen) also contributed handsomely to the team performance knocking over some delightful scores. By the way; Paddy has been playing first team football for the club since before some of his younger team mates were born, a fact that was mention on Sunday night, and as one would expect drew some wry comments, but these like many an opponent didn't faze the bold Pat.
The team on duty was Mark Keogh, Mark Mc Guigan, Emlyn Clerkin Damien Connolly, Martin Kieran, Padraic Mc Guirk Philip Farrell, Derek Mc Mahon, Noel Rice, Eamonn Mc Quillan, Patrick Kieran (Sen) Sean Mc Crudden, James Treanor, David Mc Entee, and Damien Larkin. Sub used Patrick Kieran for Eamonn Mc Quillan, Shane O Neill for Derek Mc Mahon Nigel Lynch for Patrick Kieran (Sen).

'A's clock up another win
JFL Seans 2 - 11 Killanny 1 -5 (30th Apr 2010)

Our adult squad had a somewhat flattering nine points to spare over visitors Killanny in their Junior football league clash at TMH on Friday evening last, the final lopsided appearance of the scoreboard hides the fact that this was a much closer affair than the result suggests. The visitors were always in contention and when they banged in a second half goal mid way through the half they were well and truly back in the game, only a single point seperating the sides.

David McEntee comes through a strong Killanny challenge (Pic courtessy of www.drumlinsport.com)

It was thanks to a purple patch in the last ten-minute from our boys that yielded 1-3 that put the sheen on the scoreline. Our defence performed well particularly Emyln Clerkin in the full back berth, the youthful midfield pairing of David Mc Entee and Paraic Mc Guirk got through a tremendous amount of work, upfront the inside forward line of James Treanor Damien Larkin and Patrick Kieran posed the biggest treat. The number of unforced error especially around the middle third of the park will be a cause of some concern for manager Gary Larkin and his selectors, no doubt Gary will be anxious to get his charges out on the training pitch as he sets about eliminating and reducing these turn overs, but he'll have to do that quickly, as another formidable test awaits on Saturday when the squad travel to Clones for the earlier that usual Saturday evening throw in time of 5.00pm.

'C' Team share the spoils with Neighbours Aghabog
RFL D4 - Seans 2-09 Aghabog 2-09 (Mon 5th Apr 2010)

Our “C” squads Easter Monday hosting of visitors Aghabog in the RFL Div 4 competition ended all square on 2 - 9 apiece. This game played in gusty conditions was an enjoyable affair with some fine fielding, good passing movements and excellent scores. Daire Freeman bagging his goal with some aplomb, Gary Larkin now in the twilight of his career also showed he hasn’t lost his eye for the net, rowing in with his team second major. Further back Adrian Mc Carron in goal made a number of fine saves and was the toast of team mates defying the visitors as he did from the penalty spot. Ruari Mc Carron made a number of timely interceptions in an over worked defence and was often the rock on which many of the visitors attacks faltered especially in the second half when assisted by that strong breeze. John Paul and Eunan Mc Entee along with Conal Mc Crudden used their superior height advantage to good effect ensuring a plentiful supply of the ball around the middle of the field. Up front as well as the two goal scorers it was good to see Adrian Larkin moving well again after a long lay off through injury.
