U14 Shield Finals What a weekend of football last Saturday and Sunday was, with the Division 3 and Division 6 Shield finals. Up first was Clones on Saturday, which was a humdinger from start to finish. Neither side gave up in their mission to secure the silverware. In the end the Seans edged a lead which Clones couldn’t grapple back, and the lads collected the first trophy of the year. Next was the visit of Inniskeen on Sunday morning for the Division 6 decider. Once again, there was no holding back from either side as they moved the ball through some superb passages of play. The heat exhaustion on both teams was evident as they traded score for score. At the final whistle, the Seans were jubilant at, what they thought was a win, as Inniskeen lay deflated in the scorching conditions. However, in a bizarre twist and after much counting and discussion, the referee deemed it was a draw, and extra time would be required. This disrupted everybody’s momentum, and following two periods of seven minutes, Inniskeen claimed the victory by a single point. The disappointment of the lads was profound as the tears and frustration emerged. Unforeseen things happen in football, and no doubt, the team will be stronger for it. A huge congratulations to the entire squad for their efforts over the two days, with many players taking part in both games. Their coaches have worked tirelessly with them, and we hope this will carry through for another big final or two this year.
